O-Genio: Ray Charles Live In Brazil 1963 I picked up this 2004 Rhino DVD today at Best Buy for $13. Taped on September 22, 1963, one day before Ray's 33rd birthday, this performance features two concerts as broadcast on Brazilian TV.
SHOW 1: WHAT'D I SAY TAKE THESE CHAINS FROM MY HEART YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE DON'T SET ME FREE CARRY ME BACK TO OLD VIRGINNY MY BONNIE IN THE EVENING (WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN) JUST A LITTLE LOVIN' YOU DON'T KNOW ME MARGIE HIT THE ROAD JACK MOANIN' BIRTH OF A BAND HALLELUJAH I LOVE HER SO UNTITLED JAZZ INSTRUMENTAL SHOW 2: HALLELUJAH I LOVE HER SO IN THE EVENING (WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN) MOANIN' MY BONNIE NO ONE DON'T SET ME FREE TAKE THESE CHAINS FROM MY HEART I CAN'T STOP LOVING YOU DON'T SET ME FREE (REPRISE) YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE WHAT'D I SAY CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENT Both shows were taped (B&W) before a studio audience with Ray's full band and the Realets. The audio & video quality of the first show is nearly flawless, lots of camera angles and closeups of the featured performers. The second show is a bit rough (some snow, minor static on some tunes, and some dark exposures), but still worthwhile. The second show also contains some brazilian textile commercials (the concert's sponsor, I assume). In any case, Ray is in his absolute prime and rocks the house. I highly recommend this DVD.
