not without playing you some of his music i can't. he was an amazing songwriter and musician. open your mind and get rid of your expectations and you'll get it. for a man in the twilight of his life to embrace music by nick cave, beck, U2 and nine inch nails is amazing in itself. that the results were as good as they were should speak volumes.

I recently started listening to Cash's music and the huge appeal to me is he managed to be such a badass but sincere at the same time. His songs carried a lot of resonance. I think when people call Cash country they're doing him a disservice. He really is rock n roll.

I think when people call Cash country they're doing him a disservice. He really is rock n roll. in his autobiography "cash", he even said that he considered his style or "genre" to be "mountain music" moreso than country & western, and that he was disappointed in most contemporary country music. i think of him as his own genre - somewhere between folk and rockabilly and whatever he was in the mood to record at the time. he was far more original than people gave him credit for...and i think he got a lot of credit.

If you can spare a few $$ pick up one of the dozens 'best ofs' that are out there and just listen...If you can spare more than a few $$$ pick up anything from his 'american recordings', that's all the explanation you need. He totally transcends the genre of country (he is in the rock & roll hall of fame to) He's elvis, he's dylan, he's tom petty, he's hank...all rolled into one. But more important: he's Johnny *dang* Cash! His music is just so down to earth, like a tree is embedded in the ground, his music is embedded in reality. I know it sounds a bit strange but the feeling i get from his music is like when i worked in the yard all day, your back is killing you, you're covered in dirt, your nails are black...but you know you worked and you know what you did was real (there's nothing more real than making something grow out of the dirt)...that's his music: REAL! [Edited 1/5/05 9:31am] It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!
