Like I said above, I think it sounds like demo tapes. The songs and voice are good, and it has a rock band feel, but i think maybe the drums are the weak spot. It's hard to tell but something is missing from the recordings to me, especially when you compare it to his past work. Wild Card sounds great. What happened? Did he lose his Monostereo? (keepin himself bizzy ! i saw Sananda 1-yr +/- ago ... and i would spend the money in a second if he still was touring ... his voice is like a orchestra in my opinion ... so much range and amazing ! I would rather pay 35.00 or whatever to see him in a small club ... rather than see ANYONE ... in the meadowlands or such ! hey i know what you mean bout his voice , at one o the gigs i was at he did an acapella set that was some o the greatest vocals ive ever heard,... yep that fuckin good !!!!!

I love all Sananda Maitreya's albums and all of his songs. I listen to most of his albums quite often. Prince is my number one artist, but I don't listen to his albums that often. When I listen to a Prince album it is mostly an album from before 1990. From his recent albums, I only play Rainbow Children.
Sananda has a much better voice than Prince does, IMHO. His lyrics are also better, Prince almost doesn't have any poëtry going on in his lyrics, Sananda's lyrics are filled with poëtry. The music of Prince and Sananda are very different from eachother. The only comparisations between the 2 is that they are both influenced by many artists and by different genres like Soul, Rock, Jazz and Classical Music. They also write their own songs, do some covers and play all instruments. Sananda is a nice guitarplayer, Prince is a better guitarplayer. Prince is a nice pianoplayer, Sananda is a better pianoplayer. Who is better? That's just an opinion of taste, that's all very personal. It has nothing to do with musical talents, cause they're both very talented artists. Most people bashing on Sananda's music don't know most of his work or just don't like the music. The same with people bashing on Prince's music, David Bowie's music or Jimi Hendix's music. I've seen Sananda quite often live, like I've seen Prince quite often live. They both do their own thing and I loved every show I've seen of Sananda, where Prince has dissapointed me quite often. Everytime Prince or Sananda visits Holland I'm going to the concert (at least once). My girlfriend once used to say that Sananda made music with his voice, she was so right. Prince can't do that cause he hasn't got the voice for it. Sananda latest project Angels & Vampires is gonna be great, he's released some songs (3 chapters, 10 songs) on his website www.sanandamaitreya.com My favourite albums so far are: Neither Fish Nor Flesh and Vibrator. I believe Angels & Vampires will also get on the top of my list. All Sananda albums so far: Love On Time (with The Touch, later released as Early Works) Introducing The Hardline According To Terence Trent D'Arby Neither Fish Nor Flesh Symphony Or Damn Vibrator WildCard (Free Internet Download) WildCard (Universal release) WildCard (Jokers´ edition) Greatest Hits (2-CD with some rare tracks) Angels & Vampires (to be released somewhere in 2005)

I myself have the free internet download and the jokers' edition, can't find the Universal release anywhere, it was taken of the market. The Universal release has a white cover, the jokers' edition has a black cover. The jokers' edition can still be bought at recordstores and his website. At his website you can find out which songs appeared on which release.

I like both artists ... enuf said bout that --- but i think Prince's strong suit is that he can do SO MUCH LIVE ... that you really do NOT know what he is gonna do NEXT ... this past yr showed me that ... I also think Prince's STRONG DANCE MUSIC ... is better than Sanandas .... DMSR live or CONTROVERSY ... kicks DANCE LITTLE SISTERS ass (but i do like em both ... ) like i said above ---- one big difference ... is Sananda keeps holding his own and/or getting better ... most people feel that Prince is goin downhill .... not that i totally agree ... but just perception ...

CalhounSq said: Serious said: Thank you! I'm mad @ him for all those bloody versions though The Download edition was for free, so that was a very nice gesture. He's also had some other songs on his website which could be downloaded for free. I can't be mad about him for that. Prince never gave any music away for free. Nowadays all Sananda songs can be purchased at Weed, they aren't for free anymore, still you are able to listen to them 3 times for free and than deside wether you'd buy them or not. The Universal release was withdrawn from sales because they didn't keep the agreement and Sananda didn't get his well earned money. He had to sue Universal for that. The Jokers' edition was released by Sananda himself and sold at his website and at concerts. It was also available at several recordstores. IMHO there's no need to be angry with Sananda for all those versions.

When Prince gives a live performance at his best he can't be beaten according to me. I just meant to say his performances where sometimes very poor. Where Sananda always gives his best. The last 2 shows of Prince where 2 of his best ever, he finally was enjoying himself and the audience again. I haven't seen Musicology yet, he's gotto come over to Holland this year, I hope. Like you I love both their music and shows.

I like to mention some artists Sananda has worked with in the past.
Wendy Melvoin, Des'ree, Branford Marsalis, Booker T & The MG's, Miki Howard, Suede, Bruce Springsteen, INXS, Bill Wyman, Bob Geldof & Brian Wilson. That's a nice list, don't you agree?!! Those musicians wouldn't have worked with him, when he wouldn't be as good as he is.

Its my understanding that he IS releasing these as demos while he records the album. I could be wrong, but I was under the distinct impression that the plan was to go back and beef these songs up, sequence them, and then release the full album. If that's the case, then its cool that he's sharing the demos as he goes (Curt Smith of Tears For Fears is doing something similar on his website for his next solo album). Personally, I want to wait until the full album is ready to go before hearing the demos, but that's just my own personal thang. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

The songs really would be good if they were recorded better. I would prefer to buy the whole thing on cd, too. But I guess for rabid fans whatever they get is good, be it demos or three versions of Wild Card. It's not like he's the most prolific artist ever. Check this song out at:

i remember reading an edition of vibe in 1999 with chris rock on the cover{not very sure though} chris mentions something bout opening shows for big names like ttd when he first started but politely suggested how forgotten and irrelevant ttd is then and perhaps even now.
does any one know if chris is still chummy with ttd?

I know Chris Rock is a major fan of Sananda's music. He's often said he doesn't understand why Sananda's musical skills are so underappreciated. I don't know whether they hang out together. What I do know is that Lenny Kravitz and Sananda call eachother regularly.
