I'll just comment on the current ones.. and restrict it to singers/entertainers, not dancers..
Janet Aaliyah (I think it was her.. there was an awards show where Usher, Pink and ?? Aaliyah did a tribute to Janet or something.. I coulda sworn she danced *just like* janet.. it was eerie). Usher Justin Timberlake Paula Abdul As much as I love to look at Brit and JLo, I just don't like their styles.. And MJ is a good dancer.. again, don't like all the crotch grabbing. The moonwalk was historic tho. Favorite choreographers: Jamie King Tina Landon Bob Fosse And of course Mayte's bellydancing. [Edited 1/5/05 17:06pm]

James Brown
Jackie Wilson-it's an absolute crime he hasn't been mentioned yet The Nicholas Brothers-Absolutely mind-blowing Gene Kelly Fred Astair Cid Charise (Might be spelled wrong) And on the subject of Michael Jackson-Anyone who impugns Michael's dancing ability is absolutely out of their mind. Say what you will about him in ANY other regard but the man is an amazing dancer. Every music video I've seen, even many of the lesser ones, usually has at least one jaw-dropping, rewinding, wtf moment and when I recently saw footage of his Bad tour, I was awestruck all over again. As for people here mentioning prince, I would definitely not put him in the list of greatest dancer. He's good but he's not nearly as impressive as a lot of other people.

I wouldn't put people like James Brown and Jackie Wilson in a dancers list. As straight up performers, they are 2 of the greatest. But as dancers, well they really only had a few moves each. They get extra points for originality though. I mean, I never sam James Brown tap dance or any shit like that . And he couldn't have been that great a dancer above all others when 10 year old Michael Jackson could mimic his every move to perfection

You may thinking of Mya, since it was she, Flusher and P!NK that performed a dance tribute to Miss Jackson. Mya performed "Pleasure Principle," Flusher did "Alright" and P!NK did "Rhythm Nation." Aaliyah introduced the performance (she didn't sing or dance that night -- I wish she did though).

I think you're doing James and Jackie a disservice (though I need to watch more Jackie Wilson before I develop a full opinion) in that characterization. Were it only for James' mash, splits, pushup routine he would be considered a great dancer and he does have plenty of other moves on top of that. Michael may have more moves and more elaborate ones, but Jackie and James were unbelievably deft and energetic in a way that practically nobody else has been. Michael surpasses them in the complexity of motion and choreography and whatnot, I'll give you that.

Have you seen the T.A.M.I. show where he and his Famous Flames updtaged the headliners Rolling Stones in 1964. The greatest performance ever caught on tape. I think that is the earliest footages of JB on tape. I would like to see his Apollo performance from his 62 Live LP (Released in 63) PRINCE: Always and Forever

I´ve seen James Brown 1,5 year ago. He doesn´t dance as much as he did in 1993 when I saw him in Belgium, but when he dances his feet still move to fast to follow with your eyes. He´s my number one by far.
Sananda Maitreya is also a great dancer and he´ll beat Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince any day with his moves.

I wonder why no one has mentioned John Travolta. Otherwise my list consists pretty much of the names that are mentioned: James Brown, Fred Astaire, Michael Jackson, Terence Trent D'arby, Bob Fosse and even Prince, and not because he's "an incredible dancer" technically but because of his spontaneity. If he hasn't got the best skills at least he's got style and attitude.
I never understood why people would put Janet on these lists. Her dancing is smooth and skilled in the "average" way, she's like any other professional dancer out there. If you put her between two dancers there's nothing that would make her stand out. Which is my opinion of course.... [Edited 1/6/05 11:47am]

I much prefer the music of Prince and Madonna to MJ but when it comes to dancing there's no other musician who can compete with him, he's simply head and shoulders above the rest.
And I think his sister, Janet, would be the first to second that. Madonna and Prince should not even be compared to him. The video for Smooth Criminal is all the evidence u need.
