Also, her parents didn't understand why she was singing the way she did. They wanted her to sing like Barbara Streisand. If you've been following her career like I have you would know that when she was younger she didn't talked too much on her personal life. I mean, she played coy about her relationship with Rick James for years, but we knew... But, last year, she opened up about her father in an interview with Sister to Sister Magazine. Here's part of it--

*No, the man she's talking about is not Rick James*

Jamie: How come you never married?

Teena: Because the one person that I really, really wanted to marry...my family pulled us apart when I was really young. There has never been any man that I ever ran across that I can compare to him. And I still love him to this day. He's one of my best friends.

Jamie: Did he eventually marry someone else?

Teena: Yes, we were 19 and 20 and my family at that particular time in my life was not at all with the Black and White Thing. We were very much in love. Right at the height of everything that was going on, my father died. And my father died on a very bad note with me. (Teena dedicated her first album to her father, Thomas Leslie Brockert).

Jamie: What happened when you introduced your Black boyfriend to your father?

Teena: When I introduced him to this man my father didn't shake his hand. My father died of a heart attack. Some of the people in my family said I killed my father and it really sent me into a really bad mental thing. And eventually our relationship couldn't hold up at that particular time. But I have compared every man I've met to him and found that they were all wanting. He was the love of my life!

Great interview. I always wondered about Teena's personal life but never really saw much out there.

But she never got the recognition she deserved outside of the black community... when I bring her up to my white friends, they go, "Teena who?" Teena is 10x more talented than almost any female singer I can name White or Black. And Madonna had the nerve to diss her a few years back.

I agree with you 100%. I'm Teena obsessive but refuse to comment on the race issue as it has nothing to do with how much I enjoy music, regardless of skin color. But none my light-skinned friends know what she's all about. I could get into this and open a whole new can of beans, but I won't.
BUT Madogna had the nerve to diss Teena? mad Not that she would have a clue what she was talking about, but what did the fossil say? Madonna is so tired I can't believe the media and people still fawn over every one of her farts. After all, Madonna would probably bet Britney is the best artist to ever live.

ROTFL....you called her a "fossil"...lol.

Yeah, even DavidEye admits that, while Madonna was played on R&B stations, no one thought for a minute she was anything but white. lol

And I don't remember and haven't read anything about Debbie being promoted in that manner! LMAO!

uhm and we were not talking about "Borderline" by that time her image had been exposed and we knew what she looked liked...she had already pimped out her black audience and got her foot through the door...even as a younging at the time I vividly remember 'Holiday" being on heavy rotation on black radio.

as far as Debbie...she was to me anyway, carbon copy freestyle..when she came out with that "Only in my dreams" ish...

That's funny, because I remember thinking Madonna was black when I was a kid. Holiday was in pretty heavy rotation on the local R&B station. In fact, a lot of my friends thought the same thing. It's not such a big deal. This was, obviously, before I'd seen any of her videos. Now, Debbie Gibson? Come on. Nobody ever thought that, and I doubt she was ever marketed that way! lol

Back to Teena Marie - I think she gets her props for what she's contributed to the soul/R&B scene. Though I think she's corny as all hell, I like her. And like a lot of strictly R&B performers, she's amassed a good number of R&B hits (7 top 10 and 23 top 100) without ever making a steady presence on top 40 radio. That's not uncommon for an R&B artist.

If I Were a Bell is a corny ballad. Those Munchkins singin' backup on It Must Be Magic crack me up (same thing with the backup vocals on I'm a Sucker for Your Love). And I can't help but laugh anytime she raps. Sometimes she tries too hard to prove how down she is, and she needn't do it. Her music does it all on its own.

I might go along with you on those songs..... but you can't win them all, besides she's had far more deep meaningful, songs of substance than not... "Now I have you... Tune in Tomorrow, Portuguese Love, Cassonova Brown and so on, that she can be excused for occasional corn.....

The first Madonna song I ever remember hearing on black radio was "Everybody" but a lot of people knew she was white. Teena had already opened doors by then. Hall & Oates was also played frequently. I don't ever remember hearing "Everybody" on pop radio.

I don't know anyone who haven't said or done something that they later thought, "How corny was that?" Speaking of "It Must Be Magic", this is what Teena had to later say about that song - Teena still digs the song - except for the "Teena went to Wonderland" break.

"My little girl, Alia, drives me crazy with it," she says with a laugh. "Cuz, she knows it sounds so corny to me now. I'm like, why did I ever do that?"

You all better watch out for Teena's gorgeous baby girl, Alia Rose. Teena takes Alia with her when she goes out on the road and they do a duet together in some of her shows. You should hear this little kid sing Alicia Keys' song, "If I Ain't Got You. She has made it her own...she rips that song up!!! Alia loves Beyonce and there's a part in Teena's show where Alia does her little Destiny's Child thing flanked by two other young girls and a young boy rapper. It's AWESOME...Alia can dance her butt off, too.

Alia is only 13 and just a itty-bitty thing, but she has a lot of potential and she has Teena guiding her. Also, I read in the LA Times that Alia had auditioned without Teena's knowledge or string-pulling and was accepted into a music program run by keyboardist-composer Patrice Rushen (remember her ?), so she's working with Alia Rose, too.

*There's a great photo of Teena Marie and daughter, Alia Rose rocking the house during Magic Johnson's holiday celebration in Hanger 8 of the Santa Monica Airport in Jan. 17, 2005 issue of Jet magazine.*

Where the topic in this post came from is....me and some friends were discussing the Lady Of Soul awards. Every year they give the Lena Horne Award for outstanding career achievement in entertainment. Some past winners have been Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, Natalie Cole, Angela Bassett and Janet Jackson and a few others.

They were kicking around some names of folks they thought were worthy and overlooked. I mentioned Teena's name and they kinda looked at me like I said Milli Vanilli or something. Now while I don't purport to believe that Teena has the voice of Chaka or Patti, when you consider her overall talents and her catalogue of music it stands up against most any contemporary R&B artist, male or female.

And it just made me wonder that if Teena was black, would she be revered more by the black community.

Yeah, R&B stations in NY used to play 'Everybody' and 'Physical Attraction' a lot.
