Any "The donnas" fans?

I've only heard a few songs of their's and thought about buying their new CD...any opinions? Here's a good article on their live vs. mime performance views...

The Donnas Say They Never Lip Synch

12 minutes ago Entertainment - AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Members of the rock band The Donnas were kind of glad when Ashlee Simpson (news) was caught lip synching on Saturday Night Live.

They were hoping it would show the world the difference between acts like them who never use backing tracks and acts who are all style over substance. Boy, were they disappointed.

"We thought, 'Finally she got caught and she's going to get punished an everyone's going to figure it out and it would be like Milli Vanilli, and everyone would return her CDs,'" said guitarist Allison Robertson.

Sales of Simpson's album "Autobiography" dipped for a week but then rose again, outselling The Donnas' "Gold Medal."

Singer Brett Anderson told The Associated Press she thought she sounded really nervous when her band performed on SNL in 2003, but there was nothing she could do about it.

"I could've sounded better," she said. "I was sort of bummed out actually, when I watched it. I was like 'Man I sound nervous.' Because I was nervous."

Simpson's band started playing a different song, and her vocal track again played "Pieces of Me," from her first performance that night.

"If we could play with backing tracks we'd be the greatest band in the world," said bassist Maya Ford. "If that was all you had to do in this industry that would be great. But we don't do that."

The women are a little more forgiving of artists like Britney Spears (news) or Jennifer Lopez (news), who dance during their performances.

"They do that because they're dancers or performers and they're moving around and doing crazy things with their butts but Ashlee Simpson just stands there," Ford said.

I've seen the Donnas live about five times over the last few years (twice last year) and I have all their albums so I guess I'm a fan. smile

The latest one, 'Gold Medal' is their best in that it's the most polished and diverse sounding. However, there was a rawness/roughness on their earlier albums that was nice and is definitely missing now. Also on their first self-titled album, their sound was much more Ramones-like. Now they are influenced more by 70s-type metal.

Basically, 'Gold Medal' is my favorite album to date, but I still enjoy listening to the old stuff they recorded in high school every now and then (like "Everybody's Smoking Cheeba" and "High School Yum Yum"--so funny).

I picked up their last album, its the only one I have of theirs. A reviewer commented on how they sort of sound like a female version of Kiss. Most of what I heard was simple-minded, fun rock. It was ok for a few listens, but it grew old quickly for me.

That's not exactly something they deny:

The Donnas are great fun. They've not released a bad album yet. Gold Medal and Get Skintight are my personal favorites of theirs. They put on a great show, but I missed them when they came through here a few months back. They've done a few nifty remakes like Too Fast for Love and Keep on Lovin' You.

With kick ass guitar licks and cornball lyrics like this, how can you go wrong?

You told me that it just couldn't be
You don't wanna go out with me
No I'm not sad, I don't even care
'Cause dumb boys like you are everywhere
yeah, that's right
B-O-R-I-N-G
Too bad you're not the boy for me
B-O-R-I-N-G
I wanted something quick and easy
I didn't like you anyway
I was just lookin for fun, uh-huh
I didn't like you anyway
I'm a speed demon on the run
You thought I would be broken hearted
Maybe I would if you weren't so retarted!
I ask your name, you don't even know
You should have dumped me on that talk show
B-O-R-I-N-G
Too bad you're not the boy for me
B-O-R-I-N-G
I wanted something quick and easy
I didn't like you anyway
I was just lookin for fun, uh-huh
I didn't like you anyway
I'm a speed demon on the run
I think that nasal spray got to your brain
I knew you were lame, from your wallet chain
A boston baked bean is the size of your head
I heard you even wet your bed
B-O-R-I-N-G
Too bad you're not the boy for me
B-O-R-I-N-G
I wanted something quick and easy
I didn't like you anyway
I was just lookin for fun, uh-huh
I didn't like you anyway
I'm a speed demon on the run I didn't like you
