China Girl vs China Girl One of my favourite songs, written by Bowie & Pop!
What do y'all think? Which version is better? Iggy Pop's version (and Bowie's) (from The Idiot, 1977) David Bowie's version (from Let's Dance, 1983) I love both, but I think the first version is much better! Those synths and the guitar performance are blowing my mind everytime I listen to the song...

i just can't get past the vocals in bowie's version - the growls, the yelps, the ever so sexy "just you shut your mouth" mumble....gotta go with uncle dayvid's version.

I've heard that among Bowie fans
China Girl is not very well liked. Is this true??

Tough choice to make!
I think I'll go with Iggy's version though since it sounds a little darker than Bowie's, and that wail.. I'm a massive Bowie fan, but overall I think The Idiot is better than Let's Dance..although I'm not forgetting though that there was alot of input from David on it. It's a bit more solid though. I don't have to skip any tracks on that one, unlike Let's dance. [Edited 12/31/04 12:00pm]

Bowie's version is funkier. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

Guess I'd pick Bowie's recent live version (if that's a choice!).
Since that one's pretty much a mixture of both, it's the best.

Didn't we just do this?
I guess it's fair to repeat myself then. It's hard to beat the combination of the Bowie vocal, Nile Rodgers production and SRV guitar. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

My favourite part in "Uncle" ( ) David's China Girl is the bass-line!

Déjá vu? (sorry it's my fault ) NP, nothing wrong with a little vu. It just confirms that it's the Bowie version. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I love the Iggy Pop version, but I think Nile R added gold dust to the song with that genius guitar intro, so I'll give it to Bowie - just this once. None of his other versions of the songs he did with Iggy have come close to their original versions: Red Money was a so-so version of Sister Midnight, Neighbourhood Threat was lame, Tonight fucking abysmal, and he also played Lust For Life live in 1996 and that was pretty bad too. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Have you heard "Sister Midnight" from the Reality tour DVD? I think it's pretty hot - I was definitely surprised to see him choose it for the tour.

Sister Midnight! Anyway... Thanks for your reply!!!

Bowie's more recent live versions (<5 years) are the best. He just sings it extremely well - in fact would he choose to re-record it once again in the shape that the live versions have come, it would probably be his finest recording. Ever.

Bowie performed good versions of "Sister Midnight" on his 1976 "Thin White Duke" tour. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

I caught a couple of shows in London. Technically he was brilliant (apart from most of the fuck-awful "Reality" songs, which made "Never Let Me Down" sound great), but he had no edge. I much preferred the "Outside" tour. There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently
