I agree.
His version of this song is amazing. The first time I heard it, I just listened to it over and over again in awe. Really haunting and beautifully done.

never fails to get me choked up, even when it's just audio without the video. "Awards are like hemorrhoids. Sooner or later, every asshole gets one."

I've known this song because of its inclusion in a Boston Public episode, it's poignant & the video is really great too.

I think Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt" is the second best take on the song, after the Bowie/NIN duet on the "Outside" tour. Listening to the latter is like hearing the teacher showing his pupil how it's done and the pupil obeying to the letter. Johnny Cash's version of Nick Cave's "The Mercy Seat" and U2's "One" outstrip the originals though, ditto his take on "Personal Jesus". There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

Yea i was at the NIN/Bowie concert and heard them do it live, it was amazng, but still I think Cash's version does something emotionally for the song, I havent heard the version of mercy seat yet I am a little behind in music any more

i think, speaking COMPLETELY subjectively, nick cave's version of 'mercy seat' is superior to johnny cash's version, which isn't to say that i'm not a fan of JC's or that i wasn't blown away by his version of the song...it's just that 'mercy seat' was the song that drew me into becoming a nick cave fan, so it's kinda sacred ground for me. and anyway, i don't see it as having to choose between JC's covers and the originals - i feel it's apples and oranges, and that was the whole appeal of the rubin/cash collaborations...hearing JC's style applied when covering songs by younger rock bands, and hearing how he sounds when recording with younger and "edgier" pop musicians.
that said, "hurt" is truly amazing, but "spiritual" gets me choked up every time i hear it.
