Dusty in Memphis

I love this album to pieces, and I think Dusty Springfield is one of the most underappreciated vocalists in pop music. She had such a distinct voice, and the whole Dusty in Memphis album showcases it perfectly. I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore has got to be one of the best heartbreak songs ever, and Just a Little Lovin' is so beautiful.

The 1999 Rhino reissue has an additional 14(!) tracks and most of them are exceptional. The liner notes are pretty extensive and give some info about the recording of the album. Re: Aretha's cover of Son of a Preacher Man:

Interestingly enough, Jerry Wexler confirms that Preacher Man was originally offered to Aretha Franklin - but she turned it down. It must have been Dusty's sly, suggestive reading that made Aretha reconsider. She then cut the song in short order. Dusty reveals the only critique the Queen of Soul ever offered her: "All Aretha ever said to me - and I died - we were in a lift [elevator], and she just put her hand on my arm and went, 'Girrlll!'"

I'm visualizing Aretha saying that as she grabs her arm, and it cracks me up! falloff

I've had this album for months, and .... have yet to listen to it.
