MADONNA "RAY OF LIGHT" SURVIVOR *ROUND 4*

Well I'm going to cry now...my favorite song on ROL got the boot. I guess it was a song I was meant to Have and not to hold... sad Well here's to the next round...my vote stays with nothing really matters.

Drowned World/Substitute For Love
Swim
Ray Of Light
Candy Perfume Girl
Skin
Nothing Really Matters
Sky Fits Heaven
Frozen
The Power Of Goodbye
Mer Girl
Let the rain come down...17 days....

Nothing really matters,
love is all we need,
Everything I give you
all comes back to me

Nothing takes the past away
like the future.

etc etc

Honestly, it sounds like Madonna wrote these lyrics after attending New Age Getaway Camp '97. Pseudo-profound bullshit. That is my main problem with the song.

Star light
star bright
first star i see tonight
star light star bright
uh yeah

That sounds like it was penned by a 7-year-old, but I still love that one. I really think the whole RoL album is pseudo-profound bs, but I love it anyway shrug

I should clarify, because I don't want to come off as knocking your opinion. I actually agree with you wholeheartedly. The problem, for me anyway, is that Madonna's lyrics have always been her downfall. I've been listening to her literally since the start. I don't say that to mean "I know more about her than you do," but to mean that I've seen little growth over the years in her ability to craft pop lyrics (the same can be said of her acting ability...but I digress).

I think the one exception to this is the Like a Prayer album. A lot of the lyrics in that album are exceptional, but that's because she was, for the most part, making a straight-forward pop album. When she tries to transcend that and send some worst of "deep message," that is when - lyrically speaking - she loses her footing. She can do it if she's talking about herself in relation to her feelings, life experiences, etc., a la Oh Father and Till Death Do Us Part. She loses me when she relates herself to the world, as she does in a lot of American Life and Ray of Light.

I have no doubt in my mind that she's a literary connoisseur, but that does not a poet make. I've accepted that a long time ago. Consequently, I've leard to drown out most of her lyrics. That is why - short story long - the lyrics in Nothing Really Matter don't bother me. I just accept it as a great dance song and forget the rest.

Sorry for the rant...

No, just the self-conscious artiness of it. That's what I was talking about. I completely agree with you, though, about her lyrics. She's definitely at her best when it's coming from the heart. When she tries to be earth mother it really sounds ridiculous when you actually study the lyrics (great music, though!).

That's where the help of those "co-producers" comes in handy lol

My problem with "Nothing Really Matters" isn't really the lyrics,it's the song itself. It's the most conventional song on the album, and musically,it sounds like an outtake from the 'Erotica' era.The other songs on 'ROL' are edgy, loud and challenging, but "Nothing Really Matters" is just a standard,by-the-numbers dance track.

That didn't help at all. It's like she decided to accentuate the most annoying quality of the instrumental.

My voting on this album from here on in is a bit random based on how I feel that particular day.

The only thing I know for sure is that "Substitute For Love" is my fave.
