Earth Wind and Fire "Live At Montreux" DVD---who else misses Sheldon Reynolds? I got this DVD as a Christmas present and it is absolutely AMAZING!! If you are a fan of Earth Wind and Fire, you must get this DVD asap! It's an incredible performance. This is their 1997 appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival and it's a killer performance! This is when they still had the talented Sheldon Reynolds in the band (guitar and vocals) and I now think it was a huge mistake for them to let him go.Of course, nobody can ever fill Maurice White's shoes, but Sheldon does an impressive job singing lead vocals on songs like "After The Love Has Gone" and "Love's Holiday".With Sheldon handling many of the parts that Maurice originally sung,it meant that Philip Bailey (who sounds heavenly here) didn't have to strain his own vocal cords. It's also a shame that percussionist David Romero is no longer in the band. His powerful solos with drummer Sonny Emory are nothing less than brilliant.Guess who even makes a guest appearance during the set-closing "Devotion"? Larry Graham (just before he became Prince's "spiritual advisor",lol).
Here is the setlist. There are 7 bonus performances from their 1998 appearance at this festival... Introduction by Claude Nobs Rock That! Jupiter Saturday Night Revolution Gratitude September Let's Groove Rock It Sun Goddess Can't Hide Love That's The Way Of The World Drum Solo Reasons Fantasy Mo's Solo Boogie Wonderland After The Love Has Gone Sing A Song Shining Star Devotion BONUS TRACKS 1998--- Kalimba Funk Intro Medley: Pride/Mighty Mighty In The Stone Solo Percussion I'll Write A Song For You Love's Holiday Getaway [Edited 12/29/04 14:29pm]

Like you said, nobody can replace 'Rice, But I must admit, I do miss Sheldon...even on record, I thought his vocals really helped, since Maurice's voice just isn't that strong anymore... " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout

I must give this a rental. I do like a little dose of Maurice with my EWF, but I've not heard or seen this DVD yet. More important than the voices - how's the hair? I'm interested specifically in Bailey and Verdine's 'dos.

Well, what about this DVD? Is it any good?
REVIEWS All Movie Guide Earth, Wind and Fire was one of the most popular and most innovative R&B groups of the 1970s, who, under the direction of leader Maurice White, created a sound that was at once funky and polished, blending danceable groves with first-class musicianship and high-level stage craft. Shining Stars -- The Official Story of Earth, Wind & Fire is a documentary created with the participation of the group that features both concert footage and interviews with the members of the group as they recount the story of their early days, their rise to fame, the group's burnout through overwork, and personal differences in the early '80s, as well as their later return to the concert stage and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mark Deming Sound: Dolby Digital Features: Classic Earth, Wind & Fire performances [Dolby Digital 5.1]; Album montage with exclusive commentary by Maurice White; Photo gallery Language: English SubTitles: EspaŁol, Portugais Time: 2 Hours

There's alot of rare footage from their early days (including a 1976 concert)....there are insightful interviews with Maurice,Philip,Verdine and the other members....there's even recent footage of the guys in the studio with producers like Wyclef and Eric Benet...the best thing about this documentary is that was produced by the band themselves. They tell their own story in their own way,and they're very candid too.Maurice discusses his Parkinson's Disease, and the guys talk about how difficult it was at first to tour without Maurice, and we even get to see the 1999 reunion of the original members, when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall and Fame. It's an incredible documentary! Get it today!!
