Why does their album have 4 stars in Rolling Stone
and high marks in other magazines? It's pure commercialism...no morality or ethics. Sadly they've come up with a particular sound involving sequencers and samplers using a few tweaked drum sounds....at least in the case of their NERD release. That's what connects them to Prince of the 80's...the original computer sounding beats, an offshoot of the Linn Drum machine, not to mention their sexually explicit content. That's not to say they haven't done some killer remixes for other artists, which is what they should KEEP doing. Just wasn't impressed with what their music has to say to a spiritually bankrupt generation. I ain't hatin', just disappointed.

Honestly, I love the Neptunes music and what they have done to a lot of artist hits, BUT that N.E.R.D. project is the weakest CD I've heard since Kool Moe Dee was out. My friend made this point to me: "When the Neptunes made this CD, there was no one to tell them they could'nt use this or that beat because they were producing their own, unlike when they produce someone else's track where that particular artist can reject that beat" I say that the N.E.R.D. cd is full of beats that was rejected by other artist. I was really waiting for this CD, but since i've listened to it(twice), it will become a coaster on my coffee table. Oh by the way, I see know ties to Prince whatsoever.
ô¿ô Life my azz muthafucka, dis is a bitness!!

I bought the N.E.R.D. cd because I read fantastic review about it. I thought it was ok but was initially dissapointed. It took me some time to get into it. I was starting to see the genius of it until I let my cousin borrow it saying, "Yo, these guys are some dope producers. They are responsible for many of the hits you hear on the radio today." When he never returned it I assumed he liked it, until I asked him about it one day. He said (and was backed up by another cousin of mine), that it sucked. He said I could have it back as it was up on a high shelf collecting dust. I was defeated and just left it there. That's too bad, too, because I was gonna buy the import version of it. Apparently it's more "beat-oriented" and I love the Neptunes beats. My favorite song right now is "Pass the Courvasier II" and it has the Neptunes all over it. The N.E.R.D. cd was a dissapointment to me because I was hoping it would sound like there productions for other artists. I respect what they tried to do with the new version (add live guitars, drums, etc.), but maybe they should stick to producing. Never thought I'd say that...

I have the original bootleg of the nerd album with the "intro", "extended tape you" and the "missing skits", and the quality is perfect. The bootleg is mainly their trademark drum machine instrumentation. When I bought the official album, minus the parts I mentioned, I was pleased that they used real instruments. The album is great and fresh as they can play various types of music. Listening to both versions is cool because you can compare the two.
The Neptunes are definitely funky. __________________________________________________

A whole thread devoted to these BEATMAKERS. Hasn't anyone learned from Prince's "Batdance"? The Joker? "Don't stop dancing?" Its messed up when music is judged completely on its danceability and not at all on its true substance. This is how they relate to Prince: This is the music Prince warned you about. Mindless dance music which does nothing to evelate musically conciousness or deliver any sort of message. Music to SUBDUE you by. Lyrically, the Nep2nes have some interesting analogies (comparing the government to a stripper in "Lapdance"), but on the whole, they are like children musically. Its funny how musical proficency tries to get reduced to "opinion" around here and in general. Prince to Motzart...The Neptunes to Prince...How about J-Lo to Patti Labelle while we're at it?

Don't bother BlaqueKnight has put me off.
Dance music is the anti-christ off all music. Music made on a computer ain't music.

I'm surprised at how many of you dislike the N*E*R*D album - I think it's a blast, if only because I can't get the line "you can get this lapdance here for free" outta my head!
It's not gonna change the world of music as we know it, but it's damn catchy and as pop music goes, is a refreshing alternative to the bubble-gum or goth-rap-metal trainwrecks we've been forced to endure over the past few years.

I love this record! It's all live instruments, funky, jazzy, rock and rap. I like the vocals too. What's not to like??? I'm going to see them live June 3 at a small club in Boston. It's gonna be good! ______________________________________________

Let me use take this opportunity 2 tell everyone that no, my name is not Nep2unes...it is Nep2nes. The "2" already has a "u" sound in it, there4 "u" is unnecessary,
Thank U. | |

i think its great its a fun CD.....not the best ever but im glad they replaced alot of the beats with live insturments it give it a unique sound.....but i do agree that theres a few neptunes tracks out there that are throw aways.....like they gave certain people studio leftovers.

IMO I think the Neptunes are in danger of being overused.....all their songs are starting to sound the same. Don't get me wrong the music they have done for Kelis, Mystical, No Doubt and Ol Dirty Bastard was innovative....but shit did they really have to work with Britney Spears, Pi Diddy and N*sync????? Do they really need to water down their sound like that? Now I hear they are gonna work with Beyonce Knowles from Destiny's "overexposed media hog" Child! and that Justin guy from N*sync! If they are not careful they are gonna be passe!

you guys have got it twisted. theres two versions of the album. one is similar to all their outside productions, same drums, etc. but the second one is with a live band. this is a fantastic garage rock/funk/soul album. its not that technically proficient at the best of times but it ROCKSSSS! and it has some inventive production too like on bobby james and stay together.
this album is v. different to their usual beats, which for the most part are often mind numbingly repetitive and formulaic. their alicia keys remix absolutely sucks also. but the album is great.

The first time I listened to that N.E.R.D. joint it gave me a headache.
I put it in the cd player and listened again (a month later)and it's aiight. The live drums, the sound was really different than anything else out there. I thought the vocals sucked. But the tracks and beats were tight. I give them props for taking thier sound live. Rock Star kicks a$$! But will someone clue Pherrel in that he can't sang?, Please?! Yeah, he can carry a little 'Give it to me' hook, or "pass the... (I cant spell that shyt!)" with Busta and Puffy, but a lead singer? Not! And while you're there, tell him that doubling up the vocal track don't help! I tried that back in tha day. "Funk is something you learn in school
and there ain't nothing funky about bein' cool." ![]()
