Norman Whitfield,,,Ego Maniac? Saw the "Temptations" movie last night and I thought that they portrayed him in a bad light. Then again, I don't know much about him so what do I know, the only thing I know from him is how he and Marvin Gaye took it to the street at some point during the recording of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine".
Not to mention the fact that he's the FUNKIEST Motown composer IMHO! What do you guys think? | |

Wasn't he the cat that, according to the movie, nearly got his butt handed to him during the recording of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"? I think Otis Williams came off worse in the movie than anyone. He must B my absolute favourite producer.
He was like this magician from outer space lightyears ahead of his time. He's a bit of a mystery tho'. Just like Sly he left the scene in early 80's. His fall in the early 80's was big. Just 1 day he was out in the cold. I wonder what he's up 2.I've just heard rumours that he's working on a new "Four Tops" album but that was years ago & nothing have come of it yet. A crying shame that Motown don't treasure his work enough 2 re.master his magical work with Undisputed truth & Rose Royce. /peace Manki | |

As 4 showing him in bad light in that movie I can only think of that he used 2 B in absolute controle in the studio & probably being a master of taking out the best of his artists by pushing them 2 the limit sometime.That's just what I think. /peace Manki | |

Norman was definitely proud of his talents, but he also didn't have a problem grabbing some ideas from others...in the late 60's, when Funkadelic were putting on their "funk on acid" shows, Norman was in the audience regularly, taking notes on what to try out with the Temptations...according to original Funkadelic bassist Billy Nelson, "..Yeah, Norman was always at our gigs...members of the Temptations would call me and Eddie (Hazel) up and say, 'Hey you know that tune y'all did last night? Norman just cut us on that this afternoon!'"
