Critics calling Duran Duran CD a flop in 2004 This article says the DD ASTRONAUT CD only sold 162,290 copies...I'm assuming that's just US sales - if that's true, pardon my venting, but it makes me cringe that these supposed Duranies will stop at nothing to get DD concert tickets to hear REFLEX and RIO, but can't even spend the $$ to buy their CD and give their new music a listen?! At the same time, this editor fails to mention that their comeback was welcomed on a global level. Call me biased, call it what you want, but i still think this is some of their best work. Astronaut is totally up there with DURAN DURAN and RIO.
PurpleDURANIEgypsy From ny daily news: One hit didn't save Duran Duran CD. Every holiday season, some acts wind up with nothing but a lump of coal. Topping 2004's list of unfortunates is Duran Duran, which recently tried to relaunch itself with the CD "Astronaut." It's the first work recorded by the band's "classic" New Romantic-era lineup since "Seven and the Ragged Tiger," 21 years ago. The only radio interested in such ancient history was Adult Top 40. This was enough to shoot the band's single "Sunrise" to No. 13, but even so, "Astronaut" drifted into oblivion this week, with total sales of 162,290. The double Durans still plan a huge spring tour that will bring them to some major venues, including Madison Square Garden on April 13. But filling an arena with fans out to hear old hits isn't nearly as tough as trying to persuade those same thirtysomethings to buy untested songs from fortysomethings who haven't delivered for eons. After all, Duran's main players (Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes) put out plenty of CDs, of dubious quality, under the old band's name up through 2000's "Pop Trash," tarnishing the brand before the full reunion. sounds like critics just being critics...
I've spent $$$ on DD memorabilia... if they think DD isn't popular, apparently they haven't gone to Ebay and see how much tickets are being sold for there.. Screw them... I hate critics anyway, DD ROCKS!!! Diana Duranies rock on!!!!

See this is where I'm out of touch with the music industry. To me 162,000+ albums is quite a bit. Let me try and sell that many.

[Edited 12/28/04 7:31am] It's not surprising that the critcs would try to dog my boys Duran Duran simply b/c they are no longer in their 20's. This is why I had to give to Prince for saying fuck you to the mainstream and incorporating his album into his ticket sells otherwise they would try to push him aside b/c he is middle aged and not Usher. The current state of the music industry sucks big time.

That album has really grown on me. One of my favorites of the year, it would be nice if they sold more. Who knows if we will get another album with all the fellas if the sales don't pick up. I'm really bummed I'm missing the tour

The record company ALWAYS has the option of dropping an act they deem unable to perform up to the standards of the contract.

But EPIC will be happy if they do well in concert sales (which they will), b/c it will make up for the poor album sales. Let the rain come down...17 days....

If they get another radio hit with "What Happens Tomorrow" or maybe "Nice" may become a dance hit if it gets released and that can help increase sales. Concerts are the bread and butter these days since radio is really limited. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!
