CLASSIC Stevie: "Love Having You Around"

Anyone else feeling this incredible jam off of the "Music Of My Mind" set? Stevie is in full one-man jam mode here and it is just unstoppable!! Incidentally, this whole album is probably my fave of all his classic 70's albums if only because the songs here are a little edgier and less polished...

Do any of the Stevie fans on here know if he ever did this one live back in the 70's? Between this song and "Girl Blue", this CD may never get out of the player!!

I'd would've loved to hear that tune live! But Yeah, The "Music Of My Mind" album doesn't get mentioned as much as the other Classic 70's albums, and you're right, it has a rougher, darker, spacier tone than the next few albums. It also has a more up close and personal feel, as if you're hearing the tunes right at the moment he thought of them, raw and unpolished... I love that feel, though... whirling, gurgling syntheszers, spacy clavinet, and Stevie's much raunchier than he would ever be on the other records(check out that fade-out on "Sweet Little Girl": " Now don't make me uh, Mad, an' act like a Nigga...."(BTW, that line is actually in the lyric sheet of the original gatefold album!) and "I Love Every Little Thing About You": "...Ev'ry Damn Thang!..."......a lot of the music on here sounds exactly like the title,as if it came directly from Stevie's Mind...from the Id....

Agree on everything..um..ev'ry DAMN thang..that you're saying!! I think that Stevie was just so happy to be in complete control of everything and he was just OD'ing on his own creativity. And again, the spontaneous feel of these songs is why I prefer them to the "too perfect" feel of say, the songs on "Key of Life". And yeah, I did notice the "nigga" comment though I didn't realize it was written out in the printed lyrics! By the way, this is DEFINITELY a headphone album..so many little things to pick out!!!! For instance...."even when she's messin' around...which is quite often"

I'm just loving this album!!

When I set out to discover `70s Stevie, the first thing I bought was Music Of My Mind and I still like it more than Fullfillingness' First Finale and Talking Book.

yes, this album is definitely overlooked. I wouldn't say it's quite as good as talking book or innervisions, but it is more raw, which makes it interestingly different from his subsequent work and it hasn't been as exposed or played as much which makes it feel fresher in some ways. Love Having You Around is one of my favorite songs ever, by any artist. Keep on Running is one of the best caper/chase grooves ever devised, superwoman set the stage for the rest of stevie's (and prince's) morphing songs. It's like the Revolver of R&B.

And as a little supplement to the "headphone album" comment. Did anyone else catch stevie saying (after he said, "Even when she's messing around which is quite often") "the motion of the music...which is messing around"

I love that album...
tho' I battled blind
love is a fate resigned
memories mar my mind
love it is a fate resigned

Over futile odds
and laughed at by the Gods
and now the final frame
Love is a losing game

Hi Phil!! Hope you're having a GREAT holiday season and BTW you are dead on about the comparison with Prince's 80's output. I couldn't agree more!!!

God, I could go on about nearly every song on here!! That synth line on "Seems So Long" is just unbelievable....kinda downbeat but funky nonetheless...particularly love the segue into this from "Girl Blue"

Same here...which says less about how I feel about both later albums (which are INCREDIBLE) and more about how much I love MOMM.

It's funny...I got into Stevie thru the "Original Musiquarium" LP (that's right, LP which I borrowed from the public library back in the 80's after hearing "Sir Duke" and just being blown away. Anyway, I fell in love with nearly everything on "Musiquarium" but particularly "Superwoman" got MUCH attention. It just sounded so different and I LOVED Stevie's multitracked vocals (though the lyrics threw me a bit....lyrically, this song is definitely a product of it's time!)

Of course, the most exciting thing was opening the gatefold to the Musiquarium LP, seeing all of Stevie's 70's catalog and realizing that I had some catching up to do!!!!
