Once more: Beck - Sea Change I don't listen to much "conventional" sounding music these days, but this album has been in my CD-player constantly during the last two years. Containing the two most honest songs I've probably ever heard about breakup, "Guess I'm Doing Fine" and especially "Lost Cause", here on this record Beck Hansen reaches very high mature levels for exhibiting bitterness and depression. The overall mood is one of "I'm tired of being depressed, but what the hell let's revel in this depression some more" without being naive or aggressive. I think it correlates extrememly well with the real-life experiences for the many of us. The ending-cut "The Side Of The Road" should really not be overlooked either. "Let 'em pass, on the side of the road..." Great conclusion for a great record.
On top it, I live in a sea-side apartment and I can definitely understand the theme of "Sea Change" and how it is joint with the mood of the record. And backwards orchestras... you know you gotta love' it. It takes a lot of guts to hire a full orchestra and flip it! A modern day masterpiece.

Aye. It's a sad but lovely record. The more I played, the more I liked.
Looking forward to his new one in the coming year, too.

Yes, great one! Have to be in the mood for it, though. Sometimes all the bitterness is just unbearable, like Nick Cave.
My favorite of his has to be Mutations, though. Anyone know any news about the next one?

This is probably my favourite Beck record. Depressing as hell, but wonderful all the same.

I really like this album, as I like all of his albums.
It sounds a bit like he's trying answer critics who might have said that he does nothing but quirky songs. It is called Sea Change, so he was obviously conscious of the very different tone this record has compared to others. Still, I think the album succeeds, which is an accomplishment. It can't be easy to do a whole album of slow depressing music. I always think of Winona Ryder when I hear Lost Cause. Wasn't he with her around the time of her troubles? I am looking forward to his next, which I hear is very rock 'n' roll Check this song out at:

Sea Change is an amazing album.. It shows his artistic abilility to reach new heights in his music... and it definantly took care of that mood.
His next ablum is very guitar oriented. He is a leader in the music industry right now, imo, I believe his music is above and ahead..

It's clearly about Leigh Limon his girlfriend / life partner for a decade. Beck found out that Leigh had cheated on him and fallen in love with another man hence the relationship break-up and the recording of this album. At least most of the songs on the first half of the record are quite directly about her, the rest is more abstract. More reflective on plain moods; the lyrics on the first couple of songs are very blatant knowing how he used to write in the past.

I love 'Guess I'm Doing Fine'. It's definitely "stuck in a traffic jam" music.

just read in this month's mojo mag that beck's new record will be a return to
"drum machines and sampler's going crazy". the album is complete and we should get it in a couple of months.

Sea Change... yes yes yes..
great album. Beck is an amazing artist, he will always surprise us with his wonderful music. I even like his first two albums, One foot in the grave and Stereopathetic Soulmanure.. very low production but still very fine albums. It's hard to say what's my favorite Beck album.. Mellow Gold maybe..

very very good album. I find myself listening to it only once in a while because I don't want to overplay it. It's so autumnal and so hurting. Exactly the kind of music I love. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps
