Dusty Soul Musical Of The Day: 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going' Of "Dreamgirls" By Jennifer Holliday Jennifer's voice in that gem is a fuckin' gut-shaker, I wish she was as focused on doing albums as much as she was focued on doing broadway.
Mom saw that show when she was pregnant with me and took me to see the 2001 re-visited show

I love the song "And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going". The only other Jennifer Holliday song I like is her uptempo jam "No Frills Love". Her other ballads just don't have that same feeling as "...I'm Not Going". It's hard to explain, but the rest of her ballads have that tame "adult contemporary", "Whitney Houstonish" feel to them, which I don't like. Andy is a four letter word. | |

The song, "And I'm Telling You, I'm Not Going" in the show is actually a reply to the entire group and business people (including her brother, and manager/lover) who have basically replaced her with a new girl named Michelle because of Effie White's (Jennifer's character in the show) attitude and problems with being forced to sing back-up to the star, Dina Jones. So when she sings, "...and you, and you, and you, you're going to love me" she's singing to all of them. On the official soundtrack it doesn't come across as well. However, if you get the Dreamgirls in Concert (2001 Concert Cast) [SOUNDTRACK] (featuring Heather Headley, Audra McDonald and Lillias White(in the Jennifer Holliday role)), it basically acts out the entire play. The song/fight leading up to the pivotal song, 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going'is just as powerful as they all lay into Effie White telling her why she's being replaced, and she tries to counter each attack culminating in the song. I never saw the play and the official soundtrack left me wondering about some of the scenes. that song for sure has one of the best vocal performances ever 
her voice is just incredible, to bad she never made the big breakthrogh. I have 4 of her albums, that debut from '83 had a rather rare outside EWF production by Maurice White. I remember there were some great songs on that I really listened to a lot back then... but that was ages ago... dang... I know what will be spinning on my turntable tonite

I somehow missed this thread the first go-around!  It's too bad she's pretty much blackballed herself from doing Broadway ever again. I've heard so many stories about the in-fighting during this show. It was so bad that she wasn't even asked to be a part of the 2001 show. Too bad, because nobody can do that part like her. | |

These rumors just piss me off SO much, because I'd love to see this as a movie. At that time, the word going around was that Kelly Price would do the Jennifer Holliday role, and she would have turned it out. I played some snippets of Jennifer Hudson (from American Idol season 2) for a friend of mine who does a lot of Broadway stuff, and he flipped out! Physically, she isn't right for the role, but that voice?!?! Ugh. I wish this movie would happen, and I wish it would happen with a great cast. Sadly, I just don't see it ever happening anytime soon. | |
