Are we just out of touch?

I know that on here we gripe a lot about the state of the popular music of the day. Do you think that we are simply out of touch with what is the trend of the day? For instance, this guy that works for me is in his 60's..I am 24. He said that Prince is overrated and thinks that Neil Diamond is MUCH BETTER than Prince. Before yall die from shock..LOL..he does have a degree of music taste..he's into Miles Davis, Coltrane, Ellington etc BUT those were the artists of HIS day..do you think that since we cant identify with whats out therefore we dislike it like my employee does...obviously Prince is a talent but it seems like every generation has a certain HATE for the popular music of that particular time. How much of that influences our feelings about current music and how much of it is legitimate?

neil diamond is the same type of music ,realy flamoyant flashy glam sorta style without going over the top like elton or liberache.if you listen to Neil Diamond you can see where hes coming from & trying to get across .posative spiritual enlightenment .people realy get UP @ old neil shows ..people already regard prince as say not as good as usher 4 example rolleyes you know how it goes out of style in time ,but you gotta do your wash

I read alot of bitching about Neptunes, when you know darn well they are skilled arrangers/producers/writers.

I think that guy is just typical. Like you said those were artists of his day. Whereas I'm always listening for someone great to come along. It's obvious that he never really listened to Prince. We all know Prince's stature in 80's music history. We know that he throws down live, I'd venture to say more then Neil Diamond ever did, though I respect him for still being able to draw sellout crowds. But c'mon, there's been artist since the ones that he mentioned that have been very impressive over the years; Early Michael Jackson, Prince, Nirvana, White Stripes, PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Bjork, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, some NIN, Ani Difranco and others, that if he and others would take the time and listen to, would know that music didn't stop at 1970.

then that song Drop It Like Its Hot by Snoop is corny too...zzzzz

then that song ummm...what was it..where the Pharrell guy was trying to sing..it reminded me of Curtis Mayfield a little bit..I cant remember the name of the song tho...is that supposed to be so skilled and great? What are their good stuff!

the song i was tryna think of is called FRONTIN..thats the Neptunes right?

I mean that song was ok..it was a breath of fresh air in the midst of the mess on radio BUT it reminds me of Curtis Mayfield or some 70's stuff..I cant listen to that and say thats some stellar work! Its above average for todays music but run of the mile in the grand scheme of things

"Grindin" and "Drop It" are THE most minimalist works in their entire oeuvre! I enjoy those songs the same way I like mid-80s electro b-boy hiphop stuff.

I can tell alot of artists by their unique sounds.

For instance, some Heart song just came on the radio that somehow I've never heard before, yet, I knew it was them.

Oh well, you like the Neptunes....I suppose I don't. I think they're tremendously overrated as producers.

any album they produced thoroughly.

That shit is a far cry from "Grindin". They write gorgeous jazz chord changes and BRIDGES in songs. The more intricate songs are usually non-single album-cuts.

Yes, but you'll never discover the Neptunes full spectrum if you think you can learn their discography via radio.

i dunno. i always thought that they're music is well tailored for the person they are making it for whether i like the song or not. i did like the second version they did of Jay-z's "excuse me" as well as the first version.
