Of course JanFan has a point, after all that seems to be her reason for being. (LOL)
But seriously, the "gay icon" contruct in actuality is very limiting. As that empty-headed beauty ABO so eloquently demonstrated, just because you're gay doesn't mean you HAVE to like Madonna, which I believe some people resent because she hijacked the culture wholesale to further her career, but I digress. If you're gay and you hate drag queens you won't think RuPaul is an icon. If you hate standards you probably hate Judy Garland (who is a tour de force mind you). But when she was the stuff I'm sure many more straight men loved Judy then gay. I don't know what happened where is was uncool for straight men to like people like Judy and Babs, but I digress again. The fact is she makes a good point. YET, gay folks know that certain people are gay icons. It just is a fact. Not Lindsay Lohan. Why Britney is I feel has a lot to do with arrested development and bad taste. As someone said once, gay men need to realize it's not always about them. In other words, she's for little girls, at least she was. Now shes for college fratboys. But Madonna, Janet, Kylie, Liza, Babs, DC3, these are pretty much givens. Sharon Stone, Cher, Courteny Love, and numerous house divas are as well. It might be safe to say that in this multi-fractured subculture known as gay, that the majority of said subculture can lay claim to the "gay icon" stamp. |

A person is an Icon when his or her image/work (iconography) transcends their own personality/format & penetrates the 'culture'. Like Warhol's Campbell's Soup Can, taken out of context & put on a canvas it becomes a symbol of consumerism/Kapitalism in Middle America or Western society ===> Iconic i.e Madonna's cone bra or Mikey's glittery glove...they symbolize an era...etc . & while Janet has lovely cheeks she simply doesn't fit the 'Icon' description...the titty gate thing was probably Iconic though..
