Something for "The Quintet"

...V.S.O.P.: The Quintet

Miles Davis fielded two great quintets in his career.
The 1st was his mid 50s group with John Coltrane (sax), Red Garland (piano), Philly Joe Jones (drums) and Paul Chambers (bass). Maybe his good-bye look at hard bop as a leader.

The 2nd quintet consisted of Wayne Shorter (sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Tony Williams (drums) and Ron Carter (bass).
A unique group for a couple of reasons. It's his last all acoustic band and eventually signaled the end of playing traditional jazz standards. Impressionism on the horizon.

This 2nd quintet is featured here when they reformed in the back half of the 70s.
The only startling difference? No Miles. Freddie Hubbard is on trumpet.

Where was Miles? What we now know as a semi-retirement.
Maybe allowing time for the music world to play catch up from where he left them in the dust the last time?
Based on his been there done that attitude, he probably never would have done this gig anyway.
Along with getting his health back together, his next move was to put a newer face on funk.

The Quintet plays very much in the impressionistic cool-bop mode of the 60s group.
And with these hi-caliber players, how bad could this be?
The answer is not bad at all. And supposedly this wasn't their best night!

Great album. Earlier this year, they rereleased a 1979 Japan concert "V.S.O.P -Live Under The Sky" with an extra disc of bonus performances.Very recommended.

Also the Herbie Hancock Trio featuring just Carter and Williams put out a couple of LPs , "Trio" and "Third Plane" . Awesome stuff....

nod

In contrast to the haunting muted Miles sound, Freddie's got that BIG open round tone coupled with amazing technique.

After only being able to get sporadic gigs here. Can you believe that? disbelief

This is supposedly a better set, recorded five days later than the V.S.O.P.:The Quintet recording...

lol I think I have just about everything that's currently available by Hancock. There are still a few gaps in his (huge) catalog but every now and then ,stuff will turn up ,usually as a Japanese import.

Im very fond of Hubbard ,too.Particularly "Red Clay" and "First Light"...

Man, it's been years since I've heard the VSOP! I'd love to get my hands on either Live Under the Sky, or Tempest in the Coloseum!!

The Thing I Love About Herbie Is that he had projects like VSOP going on while he was also doing his electric funk albums....all the critics were crying Foul, But I always loved the fact that he had the the talent and the scope to do such a wide spectrum of music at the same time...

I couldn't agree with you more...He was doing acoustic jazz for Japan while dabbling with Disco pop and early hip-hop in the states...Probably THE most versatile jazz man ever....

I agree.

The funny thing is that show was part of a retrospective on Hancock's career also featuring the current funk band. The Quintet's set was so good that many of the purists used that as a billy club against the funk elements Jazz was incorporating.

Supposedly, that set also set the stage for the youngbloods like Wynton who seems to prefer the bop and before eras.

Wynton appeared in the HH Quartet with HH, Ron Carter & Tony Williams...for one album .I believe that was after VSOP.

It kinda bugs me that Ken Burns Jazz placed so much emphasis on Wynton and his opinions and didnt mention or interveiw HH at all.It was a missed opportunity...but we'll save that for another thread.....

You're right, I remember an interview he did around the time the Sunlight album came out, and the interviewer seemed determined to prove to him that VSOP is what he should always be doing and that he was wasting his time doing stuff like Sunlight...

Then there was that debate Herbie and Wynton had in Musician Magazine around '85....Ultimately, Wynton asked him if playing "pop" was really as fulfilling as playing jazz, and Herbie remarked that he was only truly fulfilled when he was doing Both...

Good answer from Herbie.Wynton should respect his betters..... neutral

BTW, it(Wynton's) is a valid arguement, but where would Jazz be today without those who were brave enough to innovate and take it somewhere else ?...
Im not sure about the numbers , but Ive read here and there that Mile's "Bitches Brew" is one of the top selling Jazz/Fusion LPs of all time. How can all those people who have enjoyed it over the years be wrong , just because Wynton doesnt get it ?

it's interesting that Wynton seems to be the only Marsalis that they consistently go to for interviews and quotes about Jazz now. They don't seem to ask the older brother, Branford, anymore, and he's done just as much in Jazz, and yet he always ventures out into Rock, Hip hop, Funk, and other musical realms. ...

...although, I must say, Wynton's music has gotten a lot looser in recent years...He'll probably never go "electric", but he's definitely opening up sonically, adding more rural blues, gospel and folk textures....
