KD Lang's "Hymns of the 49th parallel"

All I can say is this album is just beautiful. It's a collection of covers and K.D.'s voice has never sounded so pure. I can't believe the voice on that woman. What a gift worship

Loved it since the day I got it. She totally makes the songs her own and they tie together nicely as an album since they're all played and arranged in a similar way. The piano, light drums and string bass are really subdued and serene. There are so many great renditions on here: Simple (my absolute favorite song of hers), Love Is Everything, Bird On A Wire, Hallelujah, A Case Of You, The Valley, After the Gold Rush, Helpless. It's all great! Definitely one of the saddest, most contemplative albums I've heard.

mushy sigh Consider the cover. I can't stop thinking about it the whole time I listen to this cd. This CD definitely comes from a secret place. This album is just stunning. Each rendition is just amazing nod

She really nailed it. She accomplished a really difficult task: making a classic covers album.

I just want to agree with everyone here and share the love for this beautiful piece of work. In many ways this album has become my Joni 'Blue' of the present time. Every songs is flawless from beginning to end and leaves you long for more. Much like BLUE. It's the prefect Sunday morning record. kd Lang is a ture musical treasure and it comes to no surprise that she is hailed as such.

On the Joni tip...I was driving around with a friend last night and he played a Christmas compilation that Target put together and is selling for 5.99. It's pretty random in it's choice of artists from Gavin DeGraw to Kelly Clarkson but it does have Rachael Yamagatta doing Joni's "River" and it's flawless! It's worth shelling $6 for. Oh and Gavin DeGraw's 'Have Youself A Merry Little Christmas' is a beauty too!
Every minute of last night is on my face today....

Honestly, she could put out album after album just like this one and I'd eat it right up, that's how tasty and satisfying it is.

yeah yeah..this album is great and all but i hadn't realized how "mellow" kd has become until i pulled out "all you can eat"..damn that girl has some rockin soul and needs to get back in touch with *that*.

dont get me wrong..i love this for its melancholy feel...i love it for the hurt and pain...but come on kd...lighten up...and i dont mean lighten up in the beachboy/lawrence welk mode you were in for Summerfling.....bring back the white chick funk of "all you can eat"!! you only did it once.....do it again!! wink

She was for her first 3 albums. And her newest one dips back into it a bit. She's done a lot of different things from Ingenue onward.

I saw it on your playlist, so you did! And righteously so.

My jukebox came up with A Case Of You yesterday.

I don't think I've seen anyone mention on this thread that all of the songs on the CD are covers of Canadian canada artists (hence the title). smile

I bought this online minutes after hearing her sing "Bird On a Wire" live on NPR last....spring? Winter? I can't remember. Anyway, it's been the album I put on when I need to seek some peace ever since. My boyfriend calls it my "spirituals," and that just about covers it. Oh, and Supa yer dead-on about the cover...the music takes you there.

The album makes me very sad and pensive, but comforts me at the same time. They really are like hymns the way she does them.
