The most appropriate song I can think of for your situation is "Mama's Eyes" by Rick James:

Ever since the first day that I heard my mother cry
I knew right then and there what the feeling was like to die
Cause something deep inside me was tearing my heart into
I didn't understand what my momma was going thru
I didn't understand with no man she felt all alone
A family as big as mine in that time was no house or home
She took it to the streets on her feet and she fed us well
And now I'm here to say that today we're all doing swell

My momma lived alone on the day that she finally died
The eight of us were here as the tears fell down from our eyes
The cancer in her body had finally won the war
She didn't want to go but in heaven there is so much more
So every day you live try and give your momma all your love
You'll never know the day when she'll be called by God above
And if you want the truth you'll find that there's no disguise
Cause all you got to do is look deep in your mothers eyes

My deepest sympathies for your loss,

Andy

no way.....Dont forget "grace" and "may this be love" are on there.....

"grace" leaves the album on such a wonderful redeming high not that i suspect that album might not be considered a classic without it....it gives one hope...that after all the heartache and pain...you can still find joy.....

Well, the "Bitter" album largely constitutes somber material. Hence, it's namesake. But there are some uplifting/life-affirming gems on there like the ones you've mentioned.

When I'm in a down-and-out mood, I spin that album incessantly. Very purging.

Sosgemini you are right how the album does close out on a more uplifting note..with "Grace" being one of my all time Fave Meshell songs...but their is even desperation in that song also...I still love it That album was the soundtrack for 2000 for me...Lost my grandfather,a good friend, and a heartbreak...and she along with my series of unfortunate events pretty much set the tone for me that year.

Sarah McLachlan...really any ballad she sings can make me misty but 'Hold On' has to take the take... the song was inspired by the story of a woman whose husband was dying of AIDS and her trying to grasp the reality of it as well as staying strong for her failing spouse. On her current tour, she sings 'You Are My Sunshine' at the start of the song....beautiful (I'm tearing up right now!)

Hold On, hold on to yourself
for this is gonna hurt like hell...

Hold On, hold on to yourself
you know that only time can tell

What is it in me that refuses to believe
This isnt easier than the real thing

My love, you know that you're my best friend
you know I'll do anything for you
My love, let nothing come between us
my love for you is strong and true

Am I in heaven here, or am I in hell
at the crossroads I'm still standing

So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and I pray
that you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll see another day
when we will praise him,
for the light that shines across your face....

...from the album FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTACY or the breathtaking live albums MIRRORBALL or AFTERGLOW LIVE.

peace
Every minute of last night is on my face today....

Off the top of my head, these songs speak to sadness, I find, in its essence as well as the nature of transition that often accompanies it.

"In the Gloaming" by the Story
"Inconsolable" and "Crumbs" by Jonatha Brooke
"I Don't Care (Lonesome Road)" by Alana Davis
"Mexico" by Jump
The entire "Living with Ghosts" CD by Patty Griffin
"Sometimes it Snows in April" by Prince & the Revolution
"Mississippi" by Paula Cole
"Butterfly" by Mariah Carey
"Hope that She's Happier" (Bill Withers) by Sweetback
"I know," "Paper Bag" and "Love Ridden" by Fiona Apple
"Wheel" by John Mayer
"I Don't Miss You at All" (Ellington) by Norah Jones
"Spoon" and "The Stone" by the Dave Matthews Band
"Stay or Leave" by Dave Matthews
"I've Seen it All" by Bjork (w/Thom Yorke)
"Bulletproof" by Radiohead

One thing

Restless tonight
Cause I wasted the light
Between both these times
I drew a really thin line
It’s nothing I planned
And not that I can
But you should be mine
Across that line

If I traded it all
If I gave it all away for one thing
Just for one thing
If I sorted it out
If I knew all about this one thing
Wouldn’t that be something

I promise I might
Not walk on by
Maybe next time
But not this time

Even though I know
I don’t want to know
Yeah I guess I know
I just hate how it sounds

I Miss You
Klymaxx

I thought I heard your voice yesterday
When I turned around to say
That I loved you than I realized
And it was just my mind
Playing tricks on me
It seems colder lately at night
And I try to sleep with the lights on
Everytime when the phone rings
I pray to God it`s you
I just can`t believe
That we`re thought

I miss you (I miss you)
There`s no other way to say it
And I, and I can deny it
I miss you (I miss you)
It`s so easy to see

I miss you and me
Is it done and over this time?
Have we realy changed our minds
But it`s other`s love
All the feelings that we used to share
I refused to believe
That you don`t care

I miss you (I miss you)
There`s no other way to say it
And I, and I can deny it
I miss you (I miss you)
It`s so easy to see

I`ve got together my senses to get there
I`ve been through worse kinds of weather
If it`s over now, be strong
Can`t believe that you`re gone
I got carry over

I miss you (I miss you)
There`s no other way to say it
And I, and I can deny it
I miss you (I miss you)
It`s so easy to see

That you`re part of me now...

"I've Seen it All" by Bjork (w/Thom Yorke)

get me in that right mood and i bawl when thom asks:
"You've never been to Niagara Falls?"

and bjork responds...
"I have seen water, its water, that's all..."

then thom asks....
"The Eiffel Tower, the Empire State?"

to which bjork responds....

"My pulse was as high on my very first date!"

and here is where i loose it:

Q: "Your grandson's hand as he plays with your hair?"
A: "To be honest, I really don't care..."

for a mother to give up so much so that her child can see.... sad

which reminds me...i sometimes find myself crying during "A New Day"..not because of the lyrics but because it reminds me of the lyrics to "Next To Last Song"

Dear Gene, of course you are here
And now it's nothing to fear
Oooh, I should have known
Oooh, I was never alone

This isn't the last song
There is no violin
The choir is so quiet
And no one takes a spin
This is the next to last song
And that's all, all

Remember what I have said
Remember, wrap up the bread
Do this, do that, make your bed

This isn't the last song
There is no violin
The choir is quiet
And no one takes a spin
This is the next to last song

And that's all ...

Man, "Dancer in the Dark" was such a HARD film to watch. Gosh. The sounds were genius, and I love that duet with Thom.

But, gosh...
