Sad songs

I'm kinda in a downer of a mood... cause a friend of mine's mother died... so i'd to see everyone's favorite sad song... I'll start

Little girl don't you forget her face
Laughing away your tears
When she was the one who felt all the pain

Little girl never forget her eyes
Keep them alive inside
I promise to try -- it's not the same

Keep your head held high -- ride like the wind
Never look behind, life isn't fair
That's what you said, so I try not to care

Little girl don't run away so fast
I think you forgot to kiss -- kiss her goodbye

Will she see me cry when I stumble and fall
Does she hear my voice in the night when I call
Wipe away all your tears, it's gonna be all right

I fought to be so strong, I guess you knew
I was afraid you'd go away, too

Little girl you've got to forget the past
And learn to forgive me
I promise to try -- but it feels like a lie

Don't let memory play games with your mind
She's a faded smile frozen in time
I'm still hanging on -- but I'm doing it wrong
Can't kiss her goodbye -- but I promise to try

Promise To Try-Madonna 1989
You CANNOT use the name of God, or religion, to justify acts of violence, to hurt, to hate, to discriminate- Madonna

ill contribute to the sadness.....my boyfriend and i just recently broke up...and im feeling blue all over...this song has been my grief:

My old addiction
Changed the wiring in my brain
So that when it turns the switches
Then I am not the same

So like the flowers toward the sun
I will follow
Stretch myself out thin
Like there’s a part of me that’s already buried
That sends me out into this window

My old addiction
Is a flood upon the land
This tiny lifeboat
Can keep me dry
But my weight is all
That it can stand

So when I try to lean just a little
For just a splash to cool my face
Ahh that trickle
Turns out fickle
Fills my boat up
Five miles deep

My old addiction
Makes me crave only what is best
Like these just this morning song birds
Craving upward from the nest
These tiny birds outside my window
Take my hand to be their mom
These open mouths
Would trust and swallow
Anything that came along

Like my old addiction
Now the other side of day
As the springtime
Of my life’s time
Turn’s the other way

If a swan can have a song
I think I know that tune
But the page is only scrawled
And I am gone this afternoon
But the page is only scrawled
And I am gone this afternoon

and kd's other sad song ive been listening to a lot of late:

The room in the morning
Watching the rain turn to snow
But outside my window
Sometimes the rain falls harder than you’ll ever know
Sometimes the things that you love in the night
The morning will choose to forget

I have a habit I have been trying to lose
Everyone thinks that they know what they want
Sometimes your drug chooses you
There are some things that I’ve promised myself
Things I haven’t done yet

It’s my last cigarette
This is my last cigarette

Sometimes the people you love in the night
The morning will choose to forget

This is my last cigarette
My last cigarette
This is my last cigarette
My last cigarette

(strangely, i think this song has made me start smoking again..lol)

Billy Bragg
"The Price I Pay"

My friend said she could see no way ahead
And i was probably better off without you
She said to face up to the fact that you weren't coming back
And she could make me happy like you used to
But i'm sorry to say i turned her away
Knowing everything she said was true
And that's the price i pay for loving you the way that i do

There's something inside that hurts my foolish pride
To visit the places we used to go together
Not a day goes by that i don't sit and wonder why
Your feelings for me didn't last forever
Girl i love you so much that sometimes it's such
I'd walk a mile with a stone in my shoe
And that's the price i pay for loving you the way that i do
That's the price i pay for loving you the way that i do

So keep that phone out of my way for the things i must say
Are empty if you don't believe they're true
And that's the price i pay for loving you the way that i do
That's the price i pay for loving you the way that i do

Round Midnight - Thelonious Monk

It begins to tell,
'Round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well, till after sundown,
Suppertime I'm feelin' sad;
But it really gets bad,
'Round midnight.

Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories,
When my heart is still with you,
And ol' midnight knows it, too.

When a quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending.
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
You're out of my heart, and I'm out of my mind.

Let our hearts take wings'
'Round midnight, midnight
Let the angels sing, for your returning.
Till our love is safe and sound.
And old midnight comes around.
Feelin' sad, really gets bad
Round, Round, Round Midnight

Combine these lyrics with the haunting melody and you got yourself a melancholy time for sure.
(Currently hooked on a Sarah Vaughn rendition)

no way.....Dont forget "grace" and "may this be love" are on there.....

"grace" leaves the album on such a wonderful redeming high not that i suspect that album might not be considered a classic without it....it gives one hope...that after all the heartache and pain...you can still find joy.....

Well, the "Bitter" album largely constitutes somber material. Hence, it's namesake. But there are some uplifting/life-affirming gems on there like the ones you've mentioned.

When I'm in a down-and-out mood, I spin that album incessantly. Very purging.

Buckets of rain
Buckets of tears
Got all them buckets comin' out of my ears.
Buckets of moonbeams in my hand,
I got all the love, honey baby,
You can stand.

I been meek
And hard like an oak
I seen pretty people disappear like smoke.
Friends will arrive, friends will disappear,
If you want me, honey baby,
I'll be here.

Like your smile
And your fingertips
Like the way that you move your lips.
I like the cool way you look at me,
Everything about you is bringing me
Misery.

Little red wagon
Little red bike
I ain't no monkey but I know what I like.
I like the way you love me strong and slow,
I'm takin' you with me, honey baby,
When I go.

Life is sad
Life is a bust
All ya can do is do what you must.
You do what you must do and ya do it well,
I'll do it for you, honey baby,
Can't you tell?

Have you heard the Herbie Hancock version from the film soundtrack of the same name? It has Bobby Mcferrin on vocals, but rather than singing the lyric, he pretends to be a horn!!!Im not kidding. lol I remember the first time I heard it, I kept wondering when he was gonna start singing...till it dawned on me what he was doing.

I want to cry just reading these lyrics alone:

"1000 Oceans" composed by Tori Amos

These tears I've cried
I've cried 1000 oceans
And if it seems
I'm floating in the darkness
Well, I can't believe that I would keep
Keep you from flying
And I would cry 1000 more
If that's what it takes
To sail you home
Sail you home
Sail you home

I'm aware what the rules are
But you know that I will run
You know that I will follow you
Over silbury hill
Through the solar field
You know that I will follow you

And if I find you
Will you still remeber
Playing at trains
Or does this litte blue ball
Just fade away
Over silbury hill
Through the solar field
You know that I will follow you
I'm aware what the rules are
But you know that I will run
You know that I will follow you

These tears I've cried
I've cried 1000 oceans
And if it seems
I'm floating in the darkness
Well I can't believe that I would keep
Keep you from flying
So I will cry 1000 more
If that's what it takes
To sail you home
Sail you home
Sail you home
Sail
Sail you home

Yes I have and he does an excellent job with the melody. nod

Folks should listen to that before they skewer him over Don't Worry Be Happy.

Strange Fruit - Billie Holiday

Southern trees bear strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.

Pastoral scene of the gallant south,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolias, sweet and fresh,
Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.

No music is even necessary for this one.

Box Of Rain (Phil Lesh/Robert Hunter)

Look out of any window , any morning , any evening , any day
Maybe the sun is shining
Birds are winging or
Rain is falling from a heavy sky

What do you want me to do...to do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago

Walk out of any doorway , feel your way, feel your way like the day before
Maybe you'll find direction around some corner
where it's been waiting to meet you

What do you want me to do, to watch for you while you're sleeping?
Well, please dont be suprised when you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes you find by you,
you can see clear to another day
Maybe been seen before through other eyes on other days
while going home

What do you want me to do...to do for you to see you through?
For this is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight
Inch your way through dead dreams to another land

Maybe youre tired and broken
your tongue is twisted with words half spoken and thoughts unclear

What do you want me to do...to do for you to see you through?
A Box of rain will ease the pain and love will see you through

Just a box of rain , wind and water
Believe it if you need it
If you dont , just pass it on
Sun and shower , wind and rain
In and out the window , like a moth before a flame

And it's just a box of rain
I dont know who put it there
Believe it if you need it
or leave it if you dare

And it's just a box of rain or a ribbon for your hair
Such a long long time to be gone
and a short time to be there.....

As performed by The Grateful Dead , written in 1970 about the impending death of Lesh's father

RanMarJam

Up in a sterilized room
Where they let you be lazy
Knowing your attitude’s all wrong
And you got to change
And that’s not easy
Dragon shining with all values known
Dazzling you-keeping you from your own
Where is the lion in you to defy him
When you’re this weak
And this spacey...

So what are you going to do about it
You can’t live life and you can’t leave it
Advice and religion-you can’t take it
You can’t seem to believe it
The peacock is afraid to parade
You’re under the thumb of the maid
You really can’t give love in this condition
Still you know how you need it

They open and close you
Then they talk like they know you
They don’t know you
They’re friends and they’re foes too
Trouble child
Breaking like the waves at Malibu

So why does it come as such a shock
To know you really have no one
Only a river of changing faces
Looking for an ocean
They trickle through your leaky plans
Another dream over the dam
And you’re lying in some room
Feeling like your right to be human
Is going over too
Well some are going to knock you
And some’ll try to clock you
You know it’s really hard
To talk sense to you
Trouble child
Breaking like the waves at Malibu

When I was eight I had a friend
with a pirate smile
make believe and play pretend
we were innocent and wild
hopped a fence and slammed the gate
running down my alleyway
in time to watch Sally's pigeons fly

We loved to watch them dive and soar
circle in the sky
free as a bird from three to four
and never knowing why
neighbors pulled their wash back in
put away my Barbie and Ken
look out overhead
while Sally's pigeons fly

I had a fool's confidence
that the world had no boundaries
but instincts and common sense
come in different quantities

my heart began to
skip to the beat
of the boy next door
she had her eye across the street
on someone shy and tall
we lived our dreams
and challenged fate
in tears she told me she was late
and Sally let his pigeons out to fly...

On the dresser sits a frame
with a photograph
two little girls in ponytails
some twenty one years back
she left one night with just a nod
was lost from some back alley job
I close my eyes and Sally's pigeons fly
she never saw those birds again
and me, I can't remember when
a pirate smile hasn't made me cry
I close my eyes
and Sally's pigeons fly...

Underneath this canopy of snow
Where fifty-seven winters
Took their toll
Where did you go?
And I believed in you
I believed in you
Like Elvis Presley
Singing psalms on a Sunday
(Where did you go?)

Well she's gone to meet
Her maker
Back to where she came from
Come to save her soul...
Come to save her soul...
Come to take her home
'Cause it's late and past
Your bedtime
Well past bedtime

Angel
My angel
Fly over me
Angel...

She took her life
Within her hands
She took her life
Within her own two hands
And no-one can tell her
What to do now
And I believed in you
I believed in you
Like Elvis Presley
Singin live from Las Vegas
(Where did you go?)

Well she's gone to meet
Her maker
Back to where she came from
Come to save her soul...
