Um....What the fuck are "grits" ?

doh! Damn I wish i'd looked at this thread earlier.

Hominy is made from flint or dent corn, varieties with hard kernels that are dried on the cob then removed and soaked in a solution of baking soda, lime, or wood ash. This process causes the hulls to soften and swell. The kernels are then hulled and degermed using friction, then dried. Grits, coarse whitish grains, are ground from hominy, as is masa harina, the flour used to make corn tortillas. http://southernfood.about...ecipes.htm

Before...

After...

My wife does a variation on this substituting the shrimp for salmon croquettes drooling

Haven't you ever seen My Cousin Vinny?

Vinny Gambini: What's this over here?

Mr. Tipton: You never heard of grits?

Vinny Gambini: Sure, sure I heard of grits. I've just never actually SEEN a grit before

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Vinny Gambini: How could it take you 5 minutes to cook your grits when it takes the entire grit-eating world 20 minutes?

Mr. Tipton: Um... I'm a fast cook, I guess.

Vinny Gambini: You're a fast cook? Are we to believe that boiling water soaks into a grit faster in your kitchen than any place on the face of the earth?

Mr. Tipton: I don't know.

Vinny Gambini: Perhaps the laws of physics cease to exist on your stove. Were these magic grits? Did you buy them from the same guy who sold Jack his beanstalk beans?

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Vinny: Uh, do you remember what you had?

Town Person: Eggs and grits.

Vinny: Eggs and grits. I like grits too. How do you cook your grits? Do you like them regular, creamy, or al dente?

Town Person: Just regular, I guess.

Vinny: Regular.....instant grits?

Town Person: No self-respectin' Southerner uses instant grits. I take pride in my grits.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

And don't get me started on cheese-grits!

Salmon patties are my favorite. thumbs up! A lot of people eat them for breakfast, but I never thought of them as a breakfast food.
