I've always liked them and even owned some of their albums
but when I saw them live at Werchter last summer they hit
me upside the head. Together with Ben Harper I thought they
were the best band there.

Their performance was after dark and they played an amazing
set and the band was fcking tight.

It was pure magic. Since then I'm getting more and more into
them.

Isn't the album called 'Disintegration'? And isn't 'Pictures of you' a song on that album? It's the only album of The Cure that I have, but I'm planning to buy some more, cause I love it !

The Cure aren't goth freaks. They aren't goth at all; just an amazing left of center pop band.

I somewhat agree with you. They've got the look. They've got the fans. They've got the miserablism. Some of their albums are quite gothic, i.e. Pornography, Disintegration. But they don't seem trapped by the style like most 'goth' bands do. They're about as eclectic as a band can be.

Maybe if The Cure's first three albums were Faith, Pornography and Disintegration, they could be considered a goth band. But you're right they were much too all over the place musically for their entire career to be labeled goth. Goth is Bauhaus, Sisters Of Mercy and Fields Of The Nephilim, all of whom had a sound that was much more focused.

i don't even consider bauhaus to be goth. they were just an art rock band that got the label for having "dark" sensibilities in some of their music. and their subsequent post-bauhaus work - peter murphy's solo album, love and rockets, etc. - is anything but goth. of course, when i went through my high school goth phase, my two most favorite bands were the cure and bauhaus, but like whatever. lol

It's just like Bowie with Glam. They conquered and defined their genres, but went on to do bigger and better things.

It's why they've stuck around for so long.

Bauhaus = goth

Peter Murphy, Love And Rockets, Daniel Ash, David J, The Bubblemen, etc ≠ goth

my opinion ≠ your opinion

if bauhaus hadn't have recorded ONE song, they wouldn't have been considered goth icons. "mask" is virtually a dance album, with dub influences all over the place. if anything, they were more influenced by glam, surrealism and dada than the goth subculture.

You're right, Bauhaus wasn't influenced by the goth subculture.
The goth subculture was influenced by Bauhaus.

Bauhaus created a lot more gothic rock than just Bela Lugosi's Dead. And 'dance album' and 'goth album' can absolutely describe the same record--like 'Floodland'. You can't get more goth and more dancey than that.

i see your point and i'm not saying it's invalid. i just think that bauhaus was a whole lot more than a goth band. it's always been frustrating to me to see them dismissed as just being that. i'm not saying that's what you're doing - it's just a defensive trigger on my end, i guess.

I have the same thing with The Cure to an extent. Maybe there's part of us that's slightly ashamed to like something "goth" after a certain age. That label carries some stigma with it. I think a lot of good music gets overshadowed by the images around it. And I think with goth especially, the look keeps out as many people as it draws in. In my mind, when I hear The Cure and goth in the same sentence, I automatically think "but they're too GOOD to be goth".
