China Girl and Baby I love You : which versions? Well I've always been completely torn between Bowie's version of China Girl and Iggy Pop's version...and I'm not sure which was recorded first so I can't even go with the original (which I'd normally lean towards). Love them both in different ways. Bowie's is kinda sinister, Iggy just scary (that wailing!).
As for Baby I love You, much as I love The Ronettes I think Phil Spector somehow managed to top his original version with The Ramones. Joey Ramone's vocals are really incredible here. So what would be the popular choice if u had to choose one over the other? [Edited 12/19/04 16:14pm]

Bowie all the way.
Ronettes all the way. I am also partial to Andy Kim's cover of "Baby I Love You", which has a nice, less bombastic arrangement.

I like them for different reasons. Iggy's came first and seems to drive home the threatening tone of the lyrics. Bowie's is more urgent and sexy though. I enjoy listening to Bowie's more I'd say.

I'm kinda luke-warm on both versions of China Girl.
I like the Ramones version of Baby I Love You, but it's no replacement for the original. On a tangent - does anyone know any good stories about the recording sessions for End of the Century? I've heard that Phil Spector held Johnny Ramone at gunpoint forcing him to play Baby I Love You for hours.

Co-sign with VC any others with a similar opinion.
Of course it's The Ronettes featuring my childhood fantasy girl... ...Ronnie Spector Can't imagine a China Girl version that could surpass the combination of Bowie's vocal, Nile's production and SRV's guitar. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Actually, I think my anti-mono bias is probably due to the fact that he did such a shoddy job remastering the material for the Back To Mono box set and The Ronettes, The Crystals & Darlene Love collections. That stuff sounds NOTHING like the original 45's

(no pun intended) tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm There are some imports on the Marginal label from Europe that feature stunning stereo remasters. They're bootlegs but the sound is amazing. I don't know where they found the masters, but who cares, right? Interestingly enough one of them features "Girls Can Tell" but with Ronnie Spector on lead vocal! That was quite a find for me. It's the same instrumental and everything as the regular Crystals version. To top it all off they're 29- or 30-song compilations, which is almost double what the official releases had. They even have "The Screw (Let's Dance)" for novelty value on the Crystals collection. I also have a nice Ronettes compilation called "All The Hits" on the Charly label that's got quite nice sound, but not as good as the Marginal releases. [Edited 12/19/04 18:39pm]

You know that on some records The Crystals are actually Darlene and possibly The Blossoms. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Interestingly she did an earlier version of the song called "Johnny (Please Come Home)" and Spector just updated the lyrics for the Christmas LP.

Ronnie had such undeniable star quality. <-----They need to reissue this on CD! And my fav Ronettes pic:

Indeed. Plus there's something about that eyeliner and mascara. Those pics just earned their own folder on my photobucket page. Actually, I don't even think they got through producing the entire record - she quit because she said she couldn't work under his conditions. He wanted to do a whole record with her after "River Deep - Mountain High", though.

As for China Girl, you have to go with Bowie. Stevie Ray Vaughn has some nice guitar work on that tune. a psychotic is someone who just figured out what's going on
