Ashanti Review C-

Concrete Rose

Reviewed by Raymond Fiore

R(OTE) & B(ORING) Ashanti's new CD gets tangled in cliches and lifeless grooves

Ashanti, the princess of radio-rap hooks, shreds any hope of artistic growth on Concrete Rose the moment she demystifies her CD's title on the simpleminded ''Concrete Rose Intro'': Hip-hop is gritty, kinda like concrete, she explains, while R&B is sensual — you know, like a rose. The thin-voiced vixen's third disc bruises both genres with a slew of mostly midtempo clunkers built with her weapons of choice: faux grit and forced sensuality. Ah, but she'll always have poetry.

eek

At a really quick first glance while squinting, I thought that was a pic of DC's Kelly.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Believe it or not I'm a fan of Ashanit. I somewhat buy her ghetto princess shtick. But while her second album passed with carefully selected samples and the first was saved by some good songs ("Rescue Me", "Babay", "Happy"), this disc seems like it's trying to be like the second while being bogged down by a case of DC3 syndrome (ballads, ballads, and more ballads). It's a stinker.

Bought it the same day as "American Idiot" so that might be a factor. I haven't been able to put that one down. In comparison "Concrete Rose" is like lead.

I guess I'm just outgrowing Ashanti. My nephew recorded her performance on TRL and she was trying to be like Beyonce. She lipsanc the whole song which is a no-no to me.

Ok pretty much....
I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.
I am new. History made me. My first language was spanglish.
And I am

I got it for 9.98 at Target. I only like "Only U" and "Focus" and sadly I can't remember the rest of it.

I haven't heard her album and I really don't need to.Her music is so predictable. We already know what's on it...

***the obligatory duet with Ja Rule rolleyes

***a bunch of "awww baby"s on every other track rolleyes

***numerous samples from old school R&B songs rolleyes

***subject matter consisting entirely of "Oooh baby, only you can make me feel this way" rolleyes

***guest appearances from other artists on the Murder Inc. label rolleyes
