The replacement singers in Iron maiden (for Bruce Dickinson) and in Mötley Crue (for Vince Neil) must be strong contenders.

But worst of all was when all of the original line up of Velvet Underground (except Moe Tucker, drummer) had quit, and Doug Yule!!! relased an album in the name Velvet Undergound.
I woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert

Hey! He was cute!

Did JT replace anyone in Kool & the Gang? It's just that their music got really commercial when he became the lead singer.

They never had a true "lead singer" before JT.
What's odd is they had crossover hits around the mid-70s before they added him.
(Funky Stuff, Jungle Boogie, Hollywood Swinging)

Their next string of diluted-funk hits didn't come until the beginning of the 80s during the JT era.
(Ladies Night, Too Hot, the dreaded Celebrate, Joanna and Cherish along with a few others).

You know I don't really blame the brothers.
This is a hard business and i'm sure they've got families to take care of.
It's just knowing that many people are unaware that they were capable of tunes like Let The Music Take Your Mind, Who's Gonna Take The Weight, Love The Life You Live, Summer Madness, etc.,

JT left in '86 and returned in '95. His return hasn't helped them chart again.

Echo & The Bunnymen had some other guy sing lead after Ian McCulloch left the band. It just wasn't the same. Thankfully Ian and the group reunited a few years later.

10,000 Maniacs carried on with someone else after Natalie Merchant went solo. Again, it just wasn't the same.

Agreed. Phillip Bailey should NOT be singing Maurice's parts, the guitar player Sheldon Reynolds shouldn't be either.

...Gary Cherone and you're right, bad move.

Journey's replacement of Steve Perry...

...with Steve Augeri is another.
Not only does he sound like him, he bears a strong physical resemblance to him.

And whatever you may think about Peter Cetera's latter day work with Chicago, the loss of his voice did change the sound of that group.

Outside of Ronnie James Dio, the revolving door lead singers of Black Sabbath and Deep Purple should also be added.

Yes Kool & The Gang was straight instrumental funk before JT & actually I like dthe hits that they had once JT came aboard also. After JT left they got Bobby Harris from The Dazz Band but he only lasted for 1 cd, it was called Sweat.

It's probably not the worst but Sieadah Garrett (Excuse the spelling) in Brand New Heavies seemed like a mis-match.

The ironic thing about Gary Cherone was Extreme was really Van Halen influenced so you think it would be a no-brainer. But Eddie was on this control trip and HE messed that up. On VH3 Eddie also sings lead on "How Many Say I"

How many say no?

Sheldon isn't with EWF any more. I saw them last year at a Convention and they had some kareoke brother messin up, uh, singing Maurice's parts.

"Would You Mind.... Ha ha, yeah. Y'all like that?...If I touched If I kissed.... Where y'all from? In the back y'all clap your hands like this"
Greg Phillinganes was on keyboards looking bored out of his mind.

The Bunnymen without McCulloch?!?! Eeees no posseeble!!

My fave albums of theirs, incidentally, are two of the "comeback" albums, Evergreen and Flowers. But then, hey, what do I know, I loved Electrafixion's "Burned" album....shrug

Give Gary Cherone a break. He is tremendous singer and huge VH fan. When he toured with them they played early VH stuff of Women and CHildren and Fair Warning that they would never with Sammy.

I think the songs were just not as strong on VH III.

I would agree to wrong fit, but not bad singer.
Music is the best...

Terrence Trent D'Arby breifly took over the lead singer role for INXS for a few shows years ago. I haven't heard these performances, but reports of the shows said they sounded really good together.
