Here's what I remember about Donnie Simpson and the Video Soul show.

It was an episode done on location at a theatre or auditorium somewhere.
His guest was the late great old school comedian Robin Harris.
(House Party, Mo' Better Blues, Do The Right Thing, etc.).

Donnie introduced Robin, who was supposed to just come over and sit on the couch with him.
Instead, Robin launch into a barrage of jokes about what Donnie was wearing.
He clowned on him so hard that Donnie was literally rolling on the floor of the stage.
Of course the audience was having convulsions.

Really? What's the story on Donnie and drugs?

Anyway, I soooo miss him as well. I still have interviews he did with Cat and Greg Brooks, Levi and Eric Leeds, Sheila E and Matt Fink, BrownMark, St. Paul (some of the interview) and of course Jimmy and Terry. They even did a 2 hour show from Flyte Tyme Studios in Minneapolis. That was cool. I also have one of the funniest interviews he did, which was with the reunited Time.

What happened to BET?

my mom told me that like a year ago when he came back 2 BET on the walk of fame thing for aretha franklin

A lot of people didn't like Rachel for some reason. They said she was fake and she had "a fake caribbean accent." Was Donnie cheating on his wife with Rachel?

I thought the folks behind BET loved her. Homegirl ALWAYS had a gig on that network. I mean, didn't she host/cohost at least 3 different shows? Also, I remember once she sat down with Donnie and Sherrie. They (Donnie mostly?) seemed in awe of her beauty. The subject of race came up. Both of them wanted to know what she was. Rachel stated, unequivocally, that she was black.

Madelyn Woods had great hair. biggrin

I remember all them shits exclaim Though Sherri Carter was annoying as fuck, VERY fake. But I used to watch Donnie all the time. Didn't Video LP have regular Prince marathons? Or was that the Unseen VJ? Or damn, was it Video Vibrations?? confuse

The Unseen VJ was the host of "Video Vibrations". He was kind of like a radio DJ, you could hear him but you couldn't see him. "Video Vibrations" was the show that featured the "Monday Music Marathon" every Monday. I remember when they featured Prince one Monday around 1991 or 1992, there were too many videos to play in their two hour time slot so they extended the marathon into the following Tuesday.

I have that one on tape(circa 1990) she brought lobster, champagne and her hair was wild as fuck(as always) lol she seemed like a cool chic to hang out. I also have her other interview with him back in 1992(after that interview) she came with yellow dress and a short haircut lol the 1st ?uestion was like "Where's the lobster?" then she burts into laughter.

Vesta is a helluva comic. Caught her in concert clowning on Anita Baker & Chaka Khan lol she was saying "Anita sounds like Michael McDonald in helium". And she was doing the roll-up dance routine that Chaka does in her live shows evillol I was on the floor when she did that shit. On a side note, she WAS a Chaka's back up singer nod

I have that one on tape also. Jesse told Donnie that Morris didn't even know who those other cats were in The Time during Purple Rain. Morris would just come in, do his parts and leave. That was great. I think they aired every Time video as well as a few Morris Day, Jesse Johnson and Prince videos during that episode. It was two hours of bliss.

I remember when Donnie had Jesse Johnson (alone) as a special guest and they showed some videos that Jesse had chosen. One of which was Hendrix's "Voodoo Child". That was the very first time I ever heard Jimi Hendrix.

Chaka was a guest in in Sherri's show and it was the most hilarious interview. It was obvious that Chaka was annoyed with Sherri's ditsy way of interviewing. It seemed like after the first commercial break Chaka was THROUGH with Ms Carter and from that moment on, the interview became comical.

I remember when some girl called in and asked Chaka, if she encouraged Milini(her daughter) to pursue a career in music. Chaka's answer was very straight forward.."No , I didn't encourage her, but by not encouraging her, I may have encouraged her"...Very easy to comphrehend..However, Sherry said "I'm not sure I understand what you mean" , Chaka gave her this look that was priceless.

I was laughing when Sherri said "If I was you, I'd be like, 'I'm baaad and I know it'" and Chaka looked at her and said, "I guess that's the difference between you and me..." Poor Sherri didn't even realized that she was getting played.

But my absolute favorite part of the interview is when Chaka said she'd like to write a song by herself , for once..Then Sherri asked , "well why haven't you written a song by yourself" and Chaka said "because I don't play a musical instrument PER SAY". Then Sherry said, "Well you play the drums". DUMMMMMB!!! Chaka gave her this look like (you idiot), and responded "it would be pretty difficult to write a song on drums" .Then Chaka looked at her sorta pitying her and said "Can you understand how difficult it would be to create a song from the drums?". Chaka's facial gestures spoke volumes as to her dislike for Sherri. Sherri's questions were juvenile (to say the least) and annoying. Chaka was OVER her after the first 10 mins of the interview. Noticed after the commercial break, Chaka had her legs crossed (violently rocking one of her legs), and her arms folded. It was almost like she was trying not to slap her lol

Everytime I show that interview 2 my friends, they'll be rolling on the damn floor evillol

I saw Joe Clair a few years ago at Manny's in NYC. He had one of the finest women I have ever seen with him. I think I annoyed him 'cause I was starin' so hard at her - she was that fine. Lucky bastard...

I SO remember this one! Loved Video SOUL....This is bringing back some serious memories.

Who remembers when David Bowie showed up in 88'?
Among other things, they chatted about Bowie showing up to Paisley Park and jamming into the wee hours of the morning with our man.

If you were in Donnie's position, you would be singing your wife's praises too especially after she has taken your cheating ass back whose played and impregnated another women on the side.

Despite what went down with his personal life, I always liked his morning show better than that damn Russ Parr. Donnie's voice is smooth and relaxing

Well a couple of years ago he was in the Washington Post and he talked about the affair and admitted that he was wrong. Pretty cool of him to go public and admit his mistake. I don't know about all this baby stuff but he did come out with the affair.

I met Donnie a couple of times, as a teen. He was always cool and down-to-earth.

Wasn't "The Cappy-tann" Paul Porter (from WHUR-96.3, I believe) the "unseen VJ?"

We all watched entirely too much Video Soul in the '80s. But, dang, wasn't it the blackest thing on cable????

The first unseen vj on "Video Vibrations" was named Al or Alvin...He always did a Monday Prince special a few times a year. Gave the P man (and all minneapolis artists) much props. The Cappy-tann was the second unseen vj.

Another memory was seeing the late, great Roger Troutman on Video Soul. He bought his acoustic guitar, harmonica along with him and layed down some funky blues for Donny.

Oh yeah, remember when the did a special "Full Force is comin' to your crib for dinner" show? Donnie and Full Force "invaded" this family's house and had a big-ass, down home cooked dinner. Those were the days - BET was a totally different channel back then...

Yes, Yes I totally remember the Full Force contest. Video Soul always had a thanksgiving special.

Remember when donnie used to enter from the elevator at the begining of every show. Video soul was one of those shows that you thought was a staple. You just thought the BET would keep in on forever. Well, at least midnight love still comes on, and that ain't what it used to be. Back then in midnight love they used to mix in ol school love songs along w/ the new. Now they just play the top 40 slow songs on the radio.

nod Exactly. The DC influence is what made BET unique. It's been downhill since Viacom took over. Oh well. I guess this was an end to an era in quality Black Television Programming. I 've tried to get into TV One but it isn't the same vibe that the old BET had.
