Donnie Simpson and Video Soul!

wasnt that a great show? i remember watching it every night to see a Prince video which Donnie always played.. they also had great interviews and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were on quite a bit as well as other Prince protege's...i remember the night when JT Taylor (of Kool and the gang) came on and they were laughing about how him and Donnie looked like each other smile .i think things changed when he had that co host and then eventually she took over the show (dont remember her name) and things went downhill but it was cool while it lasted

oh yea remember later on they would have "video vibrations" with the unseen VJ smile lots of Prince on the show too

I surrre do. I grew up with Video Soul on my TV. Donnie Simpson (and Sherri Carter -- I used to enjoy her on "Screen Scene," too) were always great to watch. I remember that show was very classy and sophisticated (far cry from today's BET). I enjoyed when artists came on and gave interviews. Jam & Lewis were great, too. They also produced the theme music you heard for various seasons Video Soul, Planet Groove and Video Vibrations -- a lot of people don't know that.

Remember when they brought it back with "Video Soul Gold"? They should have kept that up. They never keep the good shows.

Really? What's the story on Donnie and drugs?

Anyway, I soooo miss him as well. I still have interviews he did with Cat and Greg Brooks, Levi and Eric Leeds, Sheila E and Matt Fink, BrownMark, St. Paul (some of the interview) and of course Jimmy and Terry. They even did a 2 hour show from Flyte Tyme Studios in Minneapolis. That was cool. I also have one of the funniest interviews he did, which was with the reunited Time.

What happened to BET?

Donnie Simpson, Sherri Carter, Video Soul, Video Vibrations and The Unseen VJ, and Video LP are when BET used to be good.

I remember all them shits exclaim Though Sherri Carter was annoying as fuck, VERY fake. But I used to watch Donnie all the time. Didn't Video LP have regular Prince marathons? Or was that the Unseen VJ? Or damn, was it Video Vibrations?? confuse

Here's what I remember about Donnie Simpson and the Video Soul show.

It was an episode done on location at a theatre or auditorium somewhere.
His guest was the late great old school comedian Robin Harris.
(House Party, Mo' Better Blues, Do The Right Thing, etc.).

Donnie introduced Robin, who was supposed to just come over and sit on the couch with him.
Instead, Robin launch into a barrage of jokes about what Donnie was wearing.
He clowned on him so hard that Donnie was literally rolling on the floor of the stage.
Of course the audience was having convulsions.

Another funny episode was when they were on location at the Television Expo in L.A. and Vesta showed up as a guest (Robert Townsend and New Edition were there as well). That woman can sing but she is also funny as all get out. She was also on as a guest in the studio a couple of years earlier but Donnie wasn't there that day, so it was just Vesta and the fill in host Yolanda Gaskins (you guys remember her?). Vesta had the whole place rolling with her impressions of Regina Belle, Tina Turner, Patti Labelle, Michael McDonald and Jackee Harry.

I miss Donnie on BET. My favorite Video Soul episode was when he had Vanity on b/c he did not know how to contain himself. I understand that for while he was kicking it with the girl from the Carribean Rhythms show Racheal and they had a child. Donnie just recently went back to his wife.

A lot of people didn't like Rachel for some reason. They said she was fake and she had "a fake caribbean accent." Was Donnie cheating on his wife with Rachel?

Hey everyone, who was the host of Video LP, I forgot her name. Years later she was a dj here in Texas but I think she moved back to DC. Anyone remember her name?

She's also doing a show on XM satellite called Love & Money.

The Video LP veejays might have been Madeline Woods or Sherri Carter?

This is no hateration Jan on my part. This is fact ask some celebrities in DC who know Donnie. However, there may be hateration on Donnie's wife's part.

Oh, no, no. I wasn't attributing it to you. Just the folks out there who have hated on her in the past for being "fake." But it takes two you know. I think Donnie and Rachel should come under fire for being shady like that.

Madelyn Woods was beyond hot, though she used to always f*** up when reading the news. Maybe she was thinking about me cool

Anyone know what happened to her?

That chick that did the roving reporter thing at movie premieres - April Sutton I think - was another hottie. BET had some of the finest women around back in the day...

Remember "sprite night" and how Phylis Hymann always used to stop by on Donnie's b-day? Remember when Babyface was on there with Tomi Braxton when she first came out? Remember When Lenny Kravitz was on there and they had to do the interview from the control room cause a snowstorm knocked the lights out?

I miss the D.C. flavor that BET used to have. It seems like back then they used to show more of a variety of R&B music. Even Rap city was better back then w/ Joe Clair and Big Les. Hey, remember prince De jour?

Remember when Grace Jones would come on? Talk about interesting...One of my favorite episodes was when Melisa Morgan (I think it was her) bought Donny a whole catered dinner on set. Donnie seemed to be cool with everybody.

I saw Joe Clair a few years ago at Manny's in NYC. He had one of the finest women I have ever seen with him. I think I annoyed him 'cause I was starin' so hard at her - she was that fine. Lucky bastard...
