Good choices mentioned in this thread!
However, I don't think Jam & Lewis produced "Save the Overtime for Me". They did collaborate on "When You're Far Away" for Gladys and the Pips, as well as "You're Number One". [Edited 12/18/04 19:32pm]

You know there is one verison of that song that was more upbeat and either did way with the sample (who it samples is on the tip of my tongue...) or used made it less pronoucable and got a lot of radio play here in Detriot. It was very lean and streamlined. Much more dancable. I enjoyed it a lot more and am dissapointed by the more chunky verisons that appear on her album. Does anybody know what verison I'm talking about and where it's featured? Is that the NBA verison? [Edited 12/18/04 19:54pm]

Bad Times (I Can't Stand It) by Captain Rapp featuring Kimberly Ball on vocals
I can't stand it You can't stand it It's just the way our parents planned it yeah This is one of those songs that make you want to run to the dance floor. I love this track. Jam and Lewis did a great job on the production. I never get sick of this song. The 2nd version with Kimberly Ball singing the whole song is ok, the original version by Captain Rapp featuring Kimberly singing the hook only is much better. Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight

Captain Rapp's Bad Times (I Can't Stand It) came out somewhere around '82 - '83. This song can be found on many many old school compilation CD's. You can even find the vinyl online. I'm not sure what your age range is or what type of music you listen to other than Prince, but this song is still played on old school stations today. Maybe someone will post it for you to hear. I have Jam and Lewis on videotape talking about the track being one of their first productions. Ohhh you keep saying stay the niiiiiiiiight

It is track #7 on a compilation CD called "Old School" (Volume 5) on Thump Records. Go to one of the web sites that sell music like Tower Records, Amazon, BMG, etc. Search for either the song title, or the artist, or you may even have to search for the record label to find it. A lot of times, the sites will let you hear a sample of the songs. [Edited 12/28/04 20:01pm] Andy is a four letter word.

Jam and Lewis is one production team to have many many hits that do not have a signature sound whatsoever...that's what I love about their work. Babyface and R kelly on the other hand are successful artists/producers who projects have a signature sound. I know a Babyface and R Kelly production when I hear it. I remember when VH1 had that show "4 on the Floor" and the girl from "Vibe" was on there and Amy Linden said, "I'm still waiting for Janet to do something (meaningful) without Jimmy and Terry" and the girl from "Vibe" says, "I'm waiting for them to do something (meaningful) without her". They both nodded. It was humorous.

There was a good remix of it on the 411 Remix album.

For example, "If it isn't love" by New Edition sounds nothing like "Fake" by Alex O'Neal. Maybe I'm interpreting signature sound differently than you are. I don't mean all their songs sound the same, though some of them do; outside of the lyrics, there isn't much difference between The Time's Pandemonium and Janet's Escapade. What I'm saying is their sound was very much different from what others were doing. There was something very distinct, particularly in the percussion tracks, in their production that didn't sound like others. You can hear it in Janet, Alexander O'Neal, Johnny Gill, The Time (well, Pandemonium, the album they produced), SOS Band, even in the NE album Heartbreak. I remember hearing a lot of these songs on the radio when I was a teenager thinking they sounded something like a Janet song. (typographical edit) [Edited 12/29/04 17:43pm]
