B-52's - Cosmic Thing (1989)

B-52's - Cosmic Thing

This is a fantastic, often-undervalued album by the B-52's. It's their biggest selling album in terms of numbers, but many people don't give all of the songs on here their proper dues. I think it's their last great album.

Of course, we ALL know "Love Shack" (the perennial warhorse from this LP), but there's also great songs on here that I simply can't do without such as "Roam" (I loved the video so much when it originally aired -- quirky and instantly memorable) "Deadbeat Club," "Channel Z" and "Follow Your Bliss." Both "Roam" and "Love Shack" were top 10 singles for the group. Music like this soon faded as Nirvana rushed in a changed the scene. sigh

Their follow-up Good Stuff (1992) pales in comparison to this work.

What are your favorite tracks from this album? Any memories you'd like to share? Their videos? concerts? Anything?

I had the tape as a 13 year old 7th grader. Only thing I've ever owned by them, but I still like it.

You already listed all my faves from this CD.

I will add that I LOVED the video for the Deadbeat Club. I know it didn't get much airplay, but it was a nice video for a gorgeous song. nod

I'm gonna have to find a used copy of this today. I could use a little bounce here at work today.

Before this record was released, the only B-52's track I knew was "Summer Of Love". After hearing this album, I bought their entire back catalog.

Does anyone remember their song, "Meet The Flintstones"? (credited to the BC-52's)

I thought that's when they hit an all time low (when they did the FLINSTONES soundtrack in '94) glad Cindy came back....

Love it... This was the first album I ever owned on CD, and I've been playing it ever since. The B-52's are a tremendously underrated band, and I think this album has much to do with that. Instead of the quirky New Wave of their first two albums (and the Mesopotamia EP) or the synth driven Whammy album, they enlisted Nile Rodgers and put out a more polished pop/dance album. Nothing wrong with that, except it didn't exactly show off their quirky musical style as much as prior albums. Plus, there's nothing more annoying than people diminishing their musical legacy to 'Love Shack'.

Regardless, worship The B-52's and worship Cosmic Thing.

heart Topaz

New cities by the sea
Skyscrapers are winking
Some hills are never seen
The universe expanding

We're gazing out to sea
Blue dolphins are singing
Minds swim in ecstasy
Clear planet, ever free

Topaz
Our hearts are traveling faster,
Faster than the speed of love
Straight through a tear in the clouds
Up to the heavens above

Bright ships will sail the seas
Starfishes are spinning
Some hills are never seen
Our universe is expanding
Moonrise upon the sea
Starships are blinking
We'll walk in ecstasy
Clear planet blue and green

Topaz
Our thoughts are traveling faster
Moving beyond the heavens above

Planets pulsating, constellations creating
Voices are guiding me to the cities by the sea
Yes, I see cities by the sea

Deep forests by the sea
Skyscrapers are winking
Some hills are never seen
The universe is expanding
Topaz

It's probably their only ballad ever. nod

But yes, that's a great album too. But only if you're a B-52's fan.

I love this album because it gave them the recognition and sales they'd been waiting for for years, it's a great album it showed the more playfull side to their quirkiness, but what do guys think about 'Wild Planet' and the '79 lp
'B-52's, my alltime favorite is 'Rock Lobster'.
