I like "hours..." quite a lot, but you won't find many supporters of it around here. It's kinda a depressed, gnarlier precursor to Heathen and Reality. It looks like you have most of the current stuff under control, so I'd recommend getting basically all his 70's stuff. A good rule of thumb that's worked for others when they want advice is to start with Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust and work your way forward chronologically. It makes the most sense that way. thumbs up!

i like hours a lot, but if i could suggest someone get either hours or an album like station to station or aladdin sane, i'd certainly suggest the latter over the former. nod

but that's a good idea - get 'em in order. the chronology tells a very cool story in and of itself.

But you can skip Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World until you've gotten the other better 70's albums and get them once you're filling in gaps. wink

actually, i really dig the man who sold the world...you have to be in the right mood for it to really hit you hard, but once it does it puts the entire album in a whole new light. (or at least that was my experience)

I always recommend Aladdin Sane for new fans.. it's the easiest of the 70's material to digest, in my opinion. It's the strongest of the bunch. But Station to Station certainly is essential.

I really like it too, but it might be his most inpenetrable album. Everything from '71-'80 is pretty easy to admire up front.

true enough. this is kinda silly, but i really "got" the appeal of "the man who sold the world" from an episode of "buffy the vampire slayer" of all things. i was never really a fan of that show, but one night i happened to be watching it and one of the characters was hanging out in her apartment listening to TMWSTW, and i remember thinking, "yeah, that's totally an album to lounge around to, come to think of it", and ever since then, i've dug on it in a whole different light. thanks, buffy! lol

I agree with the others, the best way to experience them would be chronological. If that's not possible or you don't want to, I'd say Station to Station.

BTW, if I don't get my hands on the Buddha of Suburbia CD soon, I'm gonna go nuts! Even on eBay they're selling for quite a lot of money. And I don't want to have that damn ugly cover with the characters from the show!

People, thank you soo much. I think I'll try that chronological approach.Has anyone heard that Club Bowie cd? Dude is just a bad ,bad man.I almost feel like I can pick up anything by him and find some value.

Bowie did Earthling and sorta experimented with jungle sounds, but it was basically just plain cool rock to me. I wish he would do some work with an electronic artist.Like, maybe do some trip hop or something.Work with Tricky or some artists like Thievery Corporation,k&d,massive Attack,bt,dj krush,dj shadow, automator.or someone of that ilk. His voice and lyrics would be perfect over some of those lush landscapes.

Speaking of electronic mood music;why the hell are those buddha bar cd's and electronic /arabic cd's so damned expensive??Shit!I checked out some yesterday at barnes and noble and they are all about $30!!They sound fantastic, though.I was, especially, fond of 2:arabic travels2 and chill out paris 3 by buddha bar.(I also listened to some of youssou ndour's(sp?) cd called Egypt.I want that, too. )

the club bowie CD really isn't worth it...unless you can find it priced cheep in the used bins, i'd keep away from it. the mixes aren't all that. i'd recommend it if it were priced like an EP, at 6.99 or even 9.99 - but i've always seen it priced like an import, and the music really doesn't merit the $$$.

I remember several years ago there were rumors that Bjork and Bowie had worked together to which Bjork replied, "I admire Bowie, but it's not really my thing. Just cuz cherries and olives taste really fucking good on their own, doesn't mean you should eat them together."

Oh fer sure. Just cuz I love both artists, that doesn't mean they'd be compatible. When there were rumors flying around in '98 or so about Prince finding his musical equal and being in 'creative heaven' with Bjork, I could barely contain myself. And again, her camp denied it. You start to wonder what a collaboration between the 2 would sound like. And with Bjork coming off of the white-hot creativity of Homogenic and Prince doing his New Power Soul revue, I'm glad that nothing came of it. Now if they would've gotten together in '94 or 2004, that's a different story. wink
