love this thread. So far, I didn't know ANY of these stories, yet they all make sense to me and I can imagine how this material could have worked.

Except this one didn't make sense:

Madonna's 1986 hit "La Isla Bonita" was also offered to Michael first.

***Aretha Franklin has lost many big hits that went to other artists....Natalie Cole's 1977 smash hit "I've Got Love On My Mind"...Diana Ross' 1980 hit "Upside Down".

But then she stole the whole soundtrack for Sparkle from the cast of the film, so it all worked out in the end! lol

"I'm Real" by Jennifer Lopez wasn't that supposed to be Mariah's? I remember hearing that somewhere along the line.

"heart" by Pet Shop Boys was originally offered to Liza Minnelli then Madonna, before the boys sang it themselves and scored a #1 hit.

We all know that "Happy Birthday Mr. Christian" was written for the Bangles and "Manic Monday" was written for Apollonia, but they were swapped.

Bruce Springsteen almost gave 'Cover Me' to Donna Summer, instead he released it himself and it was a huge hit.

You're right. During Mariah's highly-publicized breakdown in 2001, Mariah approached Ja Rule about a collaboration using Rick James "Mary Jane" as the base for the track. It was supposed to be a summer song for the Glitter SDTK. When all the drama happened with Mariah, Tommy Mottola (Mariah's ex-husband) INSISTED that Ja Rule record the song with Jennifer Lopez. It became one of J.Lo's BIGGEST HITS (stayed at #1 for weeks -- even during September 11, 2001).

If I was Mariah, I'd have a "breakdown," too! S**t.

Great thread.

Nobody gonna mention how Kiss was meant for Mazerati and Prince snatched it back for himself, saying it was too good to give away? lol

MARIAH CAREY has originally written 'Hero' for the 1994 film of the same name and to be sung by Gloria Estefan but Tommy Matolla insisted it was her 'next #1' hit. The song is now considered a modern standard and arguably Mariah's biggest song.

On another note, Mariah wrote 'Where Are You Christmas?" in 2000 with James Horner (of 'Titanic'/'Heart Will Go On' fame) that she would sing on the Jim Carry HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS film but because of some contractual political crap..the song had to be given to someone else, Faith Hill took the reigns and did a beautiful version of it.

Did y'all know that Bowie's "China Girl" was originally written for Iggy Pop?
In fact it's on his 1977 classic, "The Idiot" (with Bowie being his partner in crime at the time).

And then Bowie did his version and it became a hit.
NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

True. Another song ("Protection") was submitted to Summer in its place.

This was not the only time Bruce has had a brush with almost giving away a hit. "Hungry Heart" was written for The Ramones, but kept on the recommendation of Springsteen's manager/producer (Jon Landau).

Nothing as good as the Otis/Bee Gees story but...

Danke Schoen (Wayne Newton) - intended for Bobby Darin

He's A Rebel (*The Crystals) - intended for Vikki Carr
*(actually Darlene Love on lead vocals backed by The Blossoms)

We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (The Animals) - intended for Paul Revere and The Raiders

*When A Boy Falls In Love (Mel Carter) - intended for Pat Boone
*(produced and co-written by Sam Cooke)

Don't You Forget About Me (Simple Minds) - intended for The Pretenders

Rockin' Chair (Gwen McCrae) - intended for Betty Wright

Last and maybe least...
Fool For Your Loving (Whitesnake) - was intended for B.B. King eek

According to Possessed, "Kiss" was just a simple blues Prince had knocked-out quickly on an acoustic for Mazerati. Supposedly, after he'd heard what the band had done with the track, he repo'ed it (removing the bass and adding the guitar bit at the turnaround, but basically lifting the recording wholesale). The story goes that the band was none-too-happy about their lack of credit on the finished product.

NOT QUITE

She insisted MJ dress up as woman, and she as a man in the video for the song. MJ asked his sister Janet to find out where Madonna was heading with this concept. Janet tells Madonna to shove it. Idea shelved.

I don't think that's quite right either, at least not what I've heard Madonna say. She said she wanted to have more fun with the idea of being "in the closet," and poke fun at media references/public speculation about their individual sexualities. He wasn't going for it, and their collaboration ended. I hadn't heard anything about actual video planning, because they never even got around to recording the track.

That's basically what I heard (although my version had the focus only on MJ's sexuality).

You've just added more meat to what I wrote. The track was recorded with Princess Stephanie of Monaco, and MJ approached Mad Onna to appear in the video. And she was going to appear until she made her wardrobe requests. Trust me. I'm the Purveyor of Knowledge and All Things Correct. razz

  • The songwriters behind Whitney Houston's hit "How Will I Know" originally intended the song to be for Janet, but she turned it down.
  • Britney Spears' big hit "I'm A Slave 4 U" was originally presented to Janet. She turned it down.
  • Busta Rhymes urban hit "What It Is (feat. Kelis)" produced by the Neptunes was originally intended for Janet's "All For You" project. She turned it down.
  • Nelly's "Tilt Ya Head Back" was presented to both Janet and Britney to be featured on the track, but neither wanted to record it with him. It ended up going to Christina Aguilera.
  • Kelly Clarkson's 2003 summer hit "Miss Independent" was originally presented to Christina Aguilera for her "Stripped" album.

Holiday was written for Mary Wilson the former Supreme but she turned it down.

according to the Encylopida Madonnica, all you Madonnaholics know what i'm talking about, Justify My Love was orignally written for Paula Abdul

Spinning Around, Kylie's comeback song was orginally going to be used by Paula Abdul for her comeback album that never happened

Toxic was written for Kylie as was the song Showdown

Open Your Heart was written at first to go to Donna Delory

Into the Groove was going to be given away as well
