Yes they are Punk. They came out in that era, or rather the Post-Punk era. But them songs have the same intensity and drive as a typical Punk song. Plus, Punk as a genre was the alternative music then, and the Cure fit right in, so yes, they were Punk. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

They might not even like that label themselves but resistance is futile I've found. Hell, I'd like to kick out every single PVC-glad "gothik cyber fr33k" out of the industrial clubs were I allowed to, but they are there - they are consuming our records, they bring in the money - so fine, assimilate yourselves even into our realms you bastard pestilences. They are always transforming their styles to fit to make their own interpretation of it anyway. Really all it takes is the "goth connection" and you are a goth band. Though if you ask any "tr000" modern day goths if The Cure, Siouxsie and Bauhaus are goth they'd prolly say "No, those bands are not goth". Bastards! Bands with lots of goth appeal like the ones you mentioned aren't the same as goth bands. By your logic Johnny Cash should turn in his country card and declare himself a goth (if he were still alive that is). Johnny Cash: dead. Can't get more goth than that. "Awards are like hemorrhoids. That's the second time on this thread that you've misspelled Siouxsie. Maybe she should cover "Sex Shooter" and spell out her name in place of Apollonia's.

Joy Division might be slightly goth. New Order is not. Haha. C'mon mate. I am just stirring things up, surely you should have noticed that.

Oh yeah, if you're a Cure fan and you're into their "Goth" phase or whatever, this album is probably the best example of why the band was lumped into that category.
It's a good album. Very dark and very atmospheric. And there's songs about despair and depression. It's a Goth's wet dream. I personally think it's one of the more underrated Cure albums. If you can, get the cassette version of this because it includes this instrumental piece called "Carnage Visors". That is also a dark and atmospheric piece of synth heaven. It was used as a soundtrack to some animated film that the bassist's brother made. NEW WAVE FOREVER: SLAVE TO THE WAVE FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE.

But they didn't make much new wave music. Japanese Whispers and some of the songs from their next couple albums can be seen as new wave, but it's not primarily what they were about.
