i see your point and i'm not saying it's invalid. i just think that bauhaus was a whole lot more than a goth band. it's always been frustrating to me to see them dismissed as just being that. i'm not saying that's what you're doing - it's just a defensive trigger on my end, i guess.

I have the same thing with The Cure to an extent. Maybe there's part of us that's slightly ashamed to like something "goth" after a certain age. That label carries some stigma with it. I think a lot of good music gets overshadowed by the images around it. And I think with goth especially, the look keeps out as many people as it draws in. In my mind, when I hear The Cure and goth in the same sentence, I automatically think "but they're too GOOD to be goth".

i think that about the cure, too - they've recorded too many good pop songs and love songs and music in all kinds of moods, and it's just way too dismissive and lazy to just label them "goth". and with bauhaus, i think there were so many influences going on, it's just plain wrong to just label them as "goth". though i'll admit, i can see where the label came from, and it could be argued the bands (or at least their labels) were complicit in the pidgeonholing.

Bauhaus created a lot more gothic rock than just Bela Lugosi's Dead. And 'dance album' and 'goth album' can absolutely describe the same record--like 'Floodland'. You can't get more goth and more dancey than that.

See, now if goth only included the really good early bands like Bauhaus, Sisters, Nephilim, Christian Death, Xmal, Virgin Prunes, etc., then no one would be ashamed to be goth. Unfortunately its the legion of watered down clones that followed who all look like vampires that give goth a bad name.

The Cure to me are a postpunk band that just happen to have a huge goth following because of a few dark albums that they released. Anyone who considers them goth isn't really familiar with their music, goth or both.

They're just Alternative Rock to me. They've done so much to just be labelled a Goth band. That would be like calling Prince an R&B artist. The misunderstod do not realize that He's done EVERYTHING!!! Except for Cajun. giggle

By the way, I think The Smiths are better, but that's just me.

That happens to every subgenre. Look at punk in the '70s and '80s vs. now. The Ramones and Minor Threat wore really basic clothing, but everyone in a "punk" band now dresses exactly like Duane Peters and Lars Frederiksen. Point being, the music and look gets boiled down to a formula and uniform eventuall.

Randomness: I just got Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Tinderbox" album yesterday and fucking love it. Is that goth? I got into Joy Divison on a goth exploration trip but found out that they weren't goth at all. Fields of the Nephilim is really cool, but at times, Carl McCoy tries way too hard to sound spooky-ooky. I'm comfortable lumping all these bands with the Cure and Depeche Mode in terms of '80s production and mood. Forget labels.

Joy Division were like The Cure: a great postpunk band with a big goth following because Ian Curtis was such a tortured soul.

The Banshees were a punk band that experimented with other sounds during the 80s. They focused on dark, sinister music and imagery for so long that many people consider them goth. 'Tinderbox' (my favorite Banshees album) was when I think they perfected their whole dark sound. After that, they started to change directions more musically.

To me, Bauhaus were the pioneers of goth (you can't get much more gothic than "The Three Shadows"). So many bands have watered down what they did, but that hardly invalidates the real deal. What has become known as goth today is not a good representation of the genre, IMHO.

Oh, and I totally agree with you on The Cure. Some of their stuff has a goth edge to it, but they have way too much upbeat, poppy stuff to really fall into that category. Post-punk is a good description.

Any fans of the Goth freaks ? (I love The Cure).

The Cure aren't goth freaks. They aren't goth at all; just an amazing left of center pop band.

People like to say The Cure and Siouxsie are not goth. that thay are just silly pop stars. Come on! the Cure had an anti-image on there first albums that gave them the freedom to do experimental music like Bowie in the 70s. the anti-image thing Robert realised later that "was probably a mistake not establishing ourseleves as personalities earlier on." the Cure's music was always moody, cold, dark, atmospheric. very 'Goth'. Robert Smith was the guitarist with the Banshess in 1983 to the film Nocturne. Robert and Severin recorded the Glove a psychedelic album. Robert recorded Heyena with the Banshess. Robert likes to have the freedom to do experimental music like Lovecats. that does not make them not a goth band Bauhaus/Tons On Tail/Love And Rockets did experimental music too. Bauhaus is THE Goth band! Siouxsie was Punk with the Sex Pistals in the 70s then changed styles to Goth in the early 80s. The Cure and Siouxsie fit in to the Goth style more then eny other style of music and look.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

i don't even consider bauhaus to be goth. they were just an art rock band that got the label for having "dark" sensibilities in some of their music. and their subsequent post-bauhaus work - peter murphy's solo album, love and rockets, etc. - is anything but goth. of course, when i went through my high school goth phase, my two most favorite bands were the cure and bauhaus, but like whatever. lol

Bauhaus are the first "Goth" rock band!

Bauhaus = goth

Peter Murphy, Love And Rockets, Daniel Ash, David J, The Bubblemen, etc ≠ goth

my opinion ≠ your opinion

if bauhaus hadn't have recorded ONE song, they wouldn't have been considered goth icons. "mask" is virtually a dance album, with dub influences all over the place. if anything, they were more influenced by glam, surrealism and dada than the goth subculture.

Bauhaus are influenced by BOWIE albums like Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Low and Station To Station. Thay are even in the Bowie film the Hunger! Also recorded Ziggy Stardust!

I saw this Sisters of Mercy video once that was all glam and they had gospel backup singers. It was kind of like the Cult mixed with The Black Crowes. Is that goth? smile

I am a "Goth boy", I get called "Edward Scissorhands" all the time and I HATE IT! I love gothic music like Bauhaus, Tons On Tail, Love and Rockets, Skinny Puppy, the Virgin Prunes, Sisters, Christian Death with Rozz Williams, Siouxsie, the Cure and Joy Division. I wear make up and go clubing. Marlyn Manson is not goth. The satanic image is Metal not goth. Gothic music is like the old horror films like Nosferatu, spooky and atmospheric.

I don't think anyone said they were. Although I think he kinda tried with some of the stuff from '77-'79.

Musically, they're a post-punk/alternative band with gothic tendencies.
