PM DAWN Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The Utopian Experience

no doubt.. that was hot

PM Dawn's "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" — the first single from their 1991 debut album, ^Of the Heart, of the Soul and of the Cross: The topian Experience — posited new ways in which hip-hop could be combined with pop and other outside influences. Because the song was mellow, lush, and melodic, and because it had virtually no connection to the streets of urban America, it was dismissed in hardcore rap circles (most famously by Boogie Down Productions' KRS-One) as nothing but another diluted pop sellout. However, "Set Adrift" really had nothing to do with the over-simplified lyrics, obvious posturing, or hardly altered samples that informed the biggest pop-rap breakthroughs in the early '90s. The song fused samples from new romantic group Spandau Ballet's lush pop ballad "True" with a commonly sampled hip-hop drum track and urban soul vocals cast in multiple overdubs. It was a sort of fusion that hadn't really been attempted before, and that's why most critics gave the group such glowing reviews. PM Dawn was also a bit more serious and spiritual than most rap outfits, sort of the flip side of De La Soul's easygoing hip-hop hippie vibe; the lyrics of "Set Adrift" were full of Eastern-tinged, cosmic philosophizing that fit perfectly into the sonic background. Specifically, the song was about letting go of personal attachments once they had outlived their importance, allowing them to take their place in the recesses of memory, where they may or may not be recalled. Not the sort of subject matter most hip-hop groups were taking on, which gave PM Dawn a perspective as unique as their sound. Audiences responded en masse, as "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss" hit number one in the fall of 1991.

not much, really. i remember diamonds & pearls, and i can remember listening to it for the first time on my discman outside in front of the ball state student center, first thing in the morning, right after i bought it at the campus wrecka stow as soon as it opened lol - i also remember trying to buy a copy of the "cream" maxi-single later on and being refused because it had a parental advisory label on it and i'd forgotten my ID, so one of my friends had to buy it for me! falloff

other than that, i don't remember a whole lot about '91. i remember digging on the residents and sonic youth a lot back then, but what else is new.

I remember that everything I listened to in 1991 was house music and I was very heavy into it. House music was no longer underground, it was in the mainstream that year. Too bad it all had to start sounding alike and go back underground. Mainstream R&B had already gone to hell in 1991.

REM.
Prince had a comeback, though I wasn't digging it much.
U2
10,000 maniacs
I was discovering "The The", "The Smiths", "Ray Lynch", "Nine Inch Nails", "Arrested Development--yes, yes, I know", "Nirvana", and "John MellonCamp".

And I had just gotten kicked out of my house, so I was learning to be a man.
Also tried pot, did some ectacy, and kissed a guy to see what it was like.

Let me think, oh yeah--I signed up for the Air Force and finally stopped believing in God.

I remember in 1991 I used to love a show called House Party on MTV. They played all the great club/house videos that I loved from acts like C+C Music Factory, Black Box, Snap "I've Got The Power," Inner City, Mariah Carey, Madonna. I loved the "Vogue" video. I remember voguing as a child in my living room. I had no idea it was a gay ballroom dance back then!

I remember Another Bad Creation was the talk of my elementary school. They were big back then. Every little girl LOVED Another Bad Creation and The Boys. They used to play "Iesha" and "Playground" on the playground and we used to jump rope to it! Also, we liked that song by Candyman called "Knockin' Boots."

I remember videos and singles lasted longer than they do nowadays. Stuff that came out in 1990 was still getting play in '91 like LL Cool J's "Around The Way Girl" and "Pink Cookies In A Plastic Bag (Getting Crushed By Buildings)". Plus, MTV was THE S**T back then. You couldn't deny it's impact on popular culture at that moment. I also remember The Simpsons were huge and their music videos such as "Do The Bartman" and "Deep, Deep Trouble" "...a fist fight or two and Nintendo for cash..." (written by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince).

On TV, we used to tune into Arsenio Hall on KCOP (Very Independent) Channel 13 in L.A. to see what musical guest he'd bring on next. It was so hard back then to get tickets to a taping of the Arsenio Hall show. The waiting list was so long. People used to watch the Mickey Mouse Club on the Disney Channel for The Party. I remember they were big with a song called "That's Why." Miss America aka Vanessa Williams was jammin' with "Runnin' Back To You."

KDAY 1580 AM was still on the air back then in Los Angeles. I remember Pirate Radio, 103.9 KACE, Power 106 used to play a lot of Latin freestyle and dance music. KIIS-FM was still blazin' Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl" album. Janet's Rhythm Nation 1814 was still getting play everywhere -- I remember vividly going to Six Flags Magic Mountain and they were bumpin' "Escapade"! People were excited about Michael Jackson's new album in the coming year. MC Hammer was still considered cool back then, we were bumpin' "Pray." Also, Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" used to JAMMM!! (don't front!) Everybody was doing the roger rabbit and the runnin' man to that! Kid 'N' Play used to be "da bomb" with "Ain't Gon' Hurt Nobody!"

The most controversial songs at that time were Salt-N-Pepa's "Let's Talk About Sex" (I remember the alternative version "Let's Talk About AIDS"). Madonna was doin' it with "Justify My Love" (that song was sooo sexual, I remember being razzled by it). 2 Live Crew was nasty as they wanna be with "Me So Horny" (I remember being punished for singing the lyrics to that song on the playground).

I remember being at the YMCA during summertime and we'd sing Shanice's "I Love Your Smile." We'd laugh at the part where she said "psych!" hehe*! We were still rolling skating to Martika's "Toy Soldiers." Heavy D & The Boyz had a video out called "Don't Curse" (that was cool). Yo! MTV Raps was big then. VH1 was the channel that played all that "ol' 80s music." BET back then played old black & white movies from the '30s & '40s. They had Video Soul with Donnie Simpson and Video Vibrations. Babyface's "It's No Crime" used to jam.

One of my all time favorite records came out this year:
Billy Bragg- "Don't Try This at Home"

And while a few of these came out in 1990, I fully immersed myself in them all in 1991:
Blur- Leisure
The Charlatans- Some Friendly & Me In Time (single only release)
Happy Mondays- Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches
Inspiral Carpets- Life & The Beast Inside
Primal Scream- Screamadelica

my musical world would never be the same. nor would my clothes for many years- I went baggy all the way. smile "has to be a loose fit has to be a loose fit" smile

This may well be one of the most important years in MY musical history. nod

There were four big (from my perspective) albums that came out that year:

My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
Mekons - Curse of the Mekons
Jimmie Dale Gilmore - After Awhile

Overall, this was the period that I began to become slightly less obsessive about music, mostly because I was no longer riding the education gravy train and instead was facing many thousands of dollars in student loan debt.

I remember getting REALLY hyped for Prince's 'Diamonds and Pearls' CD.In the summer and fall of '91,there was a huge "buzz" surrounding that album. The first single "Gett Off" was on the radio and on MTV,and the early reports suggested that this would be Prince's strongest album in years.I wasn't disappointed.By the time it was released in October,"Cream" was my favorite song.

someone else mentioned Tara Kemp.I remember her!

I could've sworn TLC debuted in 1992 with the "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" cassingle. "Yo... mic check, 1, 2, 1, 2, we in the housssseeee yeah c'mon, 1992, I ain't too proud to beg!".

1991 was all about Squeeze Pops, Now or Laters, Limon powder, licking Kool Aid out your hand and watching In Living Color on Sunday Nights on FOX! yes
