My Duran VH1 Concert review.

This was the BEST Duran concert I have EVER attended!!! So many reasons why… #1. It was a small, intimate show. #2. The sound was PERFECT because it was at a soundstage. #3. I was a CONCENTRATED show, because even though it was only just over an hour, they made every moment count. And #4. Nick looked AMAZING. He was WORKING the eyeliner and he had a glittery tie to go with his black suit. Mmmmmm. Scrumptious! In fact, he looked so good, I had trouble finding the beat and dancing during the first song! That has NEVER happened to me at ANY time. Suddenly I was kinda dizzy and out of step and I was like “Whoa, he REALLY looks GOOD.” I of course, stood directly in front of him, but about 20 feet back so I could dance. I always position myself in front of him when I can.

The show was general admission, but we were sectioned off into 3 sections. There were seat-fillers up front, but lots of them were fans, then in the middle were VH1 and Baileys people, then the fan club. I was annoyed at first, but once the show started they took the velvet ropes down. I had a perfect view of Nick, which is hard sometimes because I’m 5’2”. I sang to him the whole time, and during Save a Prayer I think I finally caught his glance. I wasn’t sure, because I didn’t look behind me to see if he could have been looking at someone else, but there was enough space in front of me to be pretty sure he wasn’t looking at them… Then my friend leaned over and said, I think he was just looking in your direction! Again, I can’t be positive because I didn’t get a reaction, a smile… just a stare, but it was real nice… Oh, those eyes… (back in 99 I was in the 4th row and I blew him a kiss when I caught his glance and he puckered back… still makes me wet just thinking about that moment.)

Simon looked great and I could see him gyrating all over the place in my peripheral vision. His voice was a lot better than it was on Friday night. I think he was getting over a cold. I checked out Roger a few times but he’s so hard to see behind the drums. John looked pretty good too and had some funny things to say. All in all it was a lot better than when I saw them last year in a small club that held 2000 people. At that show I was about the same distance from the stage. I think last night there were about 200 people there, maybe 300. It was so much fun! I danced as hard as I did at Prince’s Hit N Run show. Every song was a hit, a fan favorite or a high-energy song from the new album.

Song by song:

Sunrise: We were ALL reaching up!
Want You More: Awesome live
Hungry Like the Wolf: The usual
What Happens Tomorrow: This is soooo great live. The lyrics means so much and Simon always goes over to John near the end to sing with him. A little Simon on John action…. wink
Astronaut: This song kicks ASS live! I mean it REALLY rocks hard, the breakdowns, the singing, the keyboards, the guitars… EVERYTHING.
Chauffeur : WOW. Absolutely brilliant. Such a dreamy and beautiful moment this was… but before there was some funny business. Some disco balls dropped down to the stage to hang between Nick and Roger. Nick made a gesture like he wanted to reach for them and Simon made a comment about bringing out Nick’s balls. giggle Then Nick said, “I think they would make good earrings.” They are so funny.
Ordinary World: This song was a bit bass heavy and started to sound out of tune because of the feedback.
Save A Prayer: OMG. So absolutely beautiful. For the chorus they dropped out the bassline and Roger did a little more drum work, it was almost like a remix and Nick’s keyboards could be heard loud and clear. I really loved how they did that. It brought new life into the song. Roger is such a great drummer. Of course this song had my Nick moment in it. wink
Nice: We had lots of fun with this one. We were singing to Simon and Simon was singing to the crowd, “There is nothing better than being with you…”
Bedroom Toys: This was MAD funky. I could not contain myself, had to shake my thang. At the end, Simon had something in his hands and he said “Anybody have some batteries? I hit the button and it wont stop vibrating.”
Notorious/We Are Family: This was a really great arrangement. In the middle they break into We Are Family for a chorus and smoothly back into Notorious.
Planet Earth: A blast from the past. And of course we all did the Sing Blue Silver adlibs… which I guess aren’t adlibs anymore… “Switch it off!”
Careless Memories: Man, this song really rocks live. This is the only time I really missed Andy. It’s very much a Roger and Andy song.
Wild Boys: Nick was working the voice synth…”Wiiiiild” “Boooooyyyyyssss”. Yummy.
Girls On Film: HOT HOT HOT!

I forget which song it was, but there was some Simon on Nick action. Simon came up from behind and nuzzled him. Ooooh la la. My friend Aimee and I were on cloud 9 after the show. We couldn’t stop talking about the show and we went to Denny’s for some crappy food. Then to the hotel to sleep and came back home today. I can’t wait to see this on VH1 on the 14th. She wore a hat so we will be easy to spot, even if only for a split second. I hope they don’t cut toooo many songs out. I REALLY want to have the Chauffeur and Save a Prayer on tape. Those were the best renditions of those songs ever.

From Duranduran.com:

Following a week spent at home in bed early last month suffering from exhaustion, guitarist Andy Taylor has been taken ill again and won't be able to resume work with Duran Duran until the New Year, when the band plan to embark on a 2005 world tour, that will kick off in Japan in late January.

Whilst Andy's condition remains without a specific diagnosis, doctors have said that he will make a complete recovery as long as he rests for the next few weeks.

Fellow band members, Nick, Simon, John and Roger, will continue with all planned live dates and promotional activities with a stand-in guitarist until Andy returns.

The Mirror

November 24, 2004, Wednesday

DURAN DURAN will be without flu-stricken guitarist Andy Taylor when they perform on the National Lottery this weekend.
The 43-year-old was absent from recent appearances in Italy and could be laid low for weeks yet. A spokesman says: "He's not been right for more than a month. He wants to make sure he's fully fit before rejoining the guys." The band, which also includes Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, Roger Taylor and John Taylor, is enjoying new fame thanks to top album Astronaut. Our insider says: "Their punishing schedule has left them knackered."

No. It was so fucking cold! I don't think we could have anyway, since it was at Sony Studios. We were kind of escorted in, and escorted out after the show.

We had to pick up our tickets at the Ritz Carlton in Marina Del Rey. I couldn't figure out why until we got to the show. This way they didn't have to check our ID at the gate, because the fan club checked it at the hotel when they gave us our tickets. The Ritz was reeeeeaaally nice. DAMN.

neutral

We waited in line, then they let us in the gates. We walked through the studio lots, past many signs that said "stage 14" and "stage 15". I didn't catch which stage we were at, but here is a list of them. http://www.sonypicturesst...ages2.html

Once we were done watching the show, we walked back the same way, and I'm sure there were people watching so we didn't hide in the corner and stay in the studio lot. There was some other big event going on, because we first went to the wrong gate on the other side of the block and they were checking IDs and making sure we were on the list.

It's quite possible. Before the show they did some audience shots. I was directly in front of one of the cameras, just about 15 feet back. I was on my tip toes, looking into the camera. I'm 5'2". During the show I danced my ass off but I moved back a bit so I could have room to move. There was a camera on one of those long arms hovering over us... but I'm not sure how far back it was filming. In the middle of the crowd, (but on the other side) there was a steady cam right in front of some people, so they will most definitely have close up shots. Oh, and there were people with hand-held video cameras and regular cameras walking through the audience taking pictures. It was really small, so you never know! I just made sure I sang every word to every song.

wink

Some other funny moments I just remembered:

Between songs we heard a loud rumble and we weren't sure what it was... feedback? An airplane? Who knows. The Simon pointed it out. "Did you guys here that loud rumble?" We said yeah... "Do you think it was Nick's tummy? He didn't get to eat before the show..." We all went "Awwww...."

When they had to pause for a bit so the camera people could switch their reels out... he mentioned that's why they had to pause for a bit and then Simon said, "Those of you bootlegging the show can switch your tapes over as well..." lol

I think the band was a little pissed about the seat-fillers that were up close instead of the fans. John said "Are you all from Central Casting? Groovy people needed for concert audience..." Simon said "Must be able to appear like they are enjoying themselves..." then said "That's ok, because we're acting like we're enjoying ourselves as well..." Well, they did a great job of pretending! I swear their energy was so good for this show. Then I heard John got pissed off at the end of their Anaheim show on Monday night... So now I'm wondering what's going on.

Simon also made mention of Andy, quoting Nick as saying that they were one "Black Suit Down". Then he introduced his stand in and said "he's cute, isn't he? Nice eyebrows..."
