Rolling Stone announces the Top 500 Songs of All-Time

In the latest issue of RS they list the Top 500 songs of all-time as compiled from votes by 172 critics and musicians that included Brian Wilson, Joni Mitchell, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and others - in a special issue that hits newsstands Friday. They say this is the most definitive and concrete musical list ever assembled in the history of music journalism. The top 10 was unveiled for the first time this morning on ABC's Good Morning America.

Here's the Top 10 songs of all-time

1. "Like A Rolling Stone"
Bob Dylan

2. "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction"
Rolling Stones

3. "Imagine"
John Lennon

4. "What's Going On"
Marvin Gaye

5. "Respect"
Aretha Franklin

6. "Good Vibrations"
The Beach Boys

7. "Johnny B. Goode"
Chuck Berry

8. "Hey Jude"
The Beatles

9. "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Nirvana

10. "What'd I Say"
Ray Charles

What are your thoughts on this? I'm curious to hear what you have to say.

if your name was in the title of a song, you'd probably name it #1 of all time too lol

Err, well the magazine is ::bells and whistles:: Rolling Stone eek

I find it strange that the top two songs have "Rolling Stone" either in its title or group name.

I betcha when Friday's issue comes out "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" will be among the other 490.

they have to say that. otherwise, what's the point in doing it, when there are already so many of these lists that have been compiled? biggrin

Actually, they just reversed the order of the Stones' "Satisfaction" and Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" from a previous RS issue where they compiled 100 of the greatest singles. I think this was sometime in the late '80s.

i see three songs on that list that had any sort of defining meaning for an era. top ten my olive complexioned white ass.

rolling stone hasn't made an intelligent proclamation in over a decade. why should this be any different?

Slave2daGroove

Rolling Stone lists of top anything are the eqivalent of interviewing people with 10 minutes of fame about pop culture from the 90's (VH1).

Neither are relevant

all of those early mornings are really taking a toll on her. she looks half-asleep most of the time, and is aging much more quickly now sad it's a shame...

I just love the self-importance of Rolling Stone. They know they're not what they once were, so they have to proclaim it now with such hyperbole biggrin

Well, if the top songs are supposed to have some kind of cheesy tie-in with the magazine making the list, I'll just wait for the Hustler Top 500 - at least I know there'll be some Lords of Acid and Peaches on the list. lol

I'm not defending RS and I haven't seen the entire song list, but do you think they would really add contemporary lightweight pop musicians to a list like this? I mean look at the top 10--except for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" all those tracks are at least 30 years old.
