Oh, joy - news about the new J.Lo album! The hubris is deafening. From AP newswire:
"For her first new CD in more than two years, Jennifer Lopez was inspired by the past. 'Old school meets new school' is how Lopez's longtime collaborator Corey Rooney describes Rebirth, due March 1, (a) which will feature such guests as Fat Joe, Fabolous and Lopez's husband, Marc Anthony. "(b)We focused on getting great songs and used a lot of live instruments and live singing," says Rooney, who is serving as co-executive producer. He gives credit to veteran engineer Bruce Swedien. "Bruce recorded everything the old-fashioned way. (c)It was really made no differently from the way that Michael Jackson made Thriller," Rooney says, except for the state-of-the-art technology used for the editing and mixing. The first single, Get Right, is a dance-club-friendly track with a saxophone hook." (a) This is an incredible change of pace for Lopez, who has never before collaborated with Fat Joe, Fabolous or Marc Anthony. (b) The vocoder and pitch correction machine were live, too! (c) Holy shit, this dude should be crucified.

As for pitch correction.. I think these singers are made to sing each line over and over until the engineers manage to record the rare 8% chance that the pitches are hit.

You mean "singers". And actually I think it all comes down to splicing together syllables with the correct pitch. It's not as if she can get entire words right.

You mean "singers". And actually I think it all comes down to splicing together syllables with the correct pitch. It's not as if she can get entire words right. That reminds me of a Mercedes radio commercial where the setup is an audio engineer punching in a line of a song. He's recording a female vocalist that sounds like a cat being strangled. He describes how all he's gotta do is a little "pitch correction and add a little reverb". The next thing you hear is the track being played back with a perfect vocal performance. He then proclaims, in a rather smug manner, "Get ready to ride the charts baby!". The punchline is something like "Things aren't always as they seem." When this kind of scenario makes it to Madison Ave., it let's you know that this has sadly become a known and accepted SOP. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."
