Never quite sure what to think of 'The White Album' really. I find it a frustratingly patchy record but then I guess that is what serves to make it more interesting.'The White Album' smacks of a certain 'we can do anything' confidence. Certainly there are songs where aloofness or pretentiousness like George's 'Piggies', Paul's'Honey Pie'- stand in the way of feeling and substance. But the sheer abundance of material especially as far as Lennon is concerned, ensures it remains in my opinion a flawed masterpiece.

As even Charles Manson found, 'The White Album''s array of sonic terrorism, pop disposability and finger-plucked acoustic dreamscapes provides something for everyone. 'Helter Skelter', 'Yer Blues','Julia' and'Sexy Sadie' are all diverse and set apart from each other.

Opening with 'Back In The USSR', takes their ability to transform influences (namely The Beach Boys and Chuck Berry) to a new level. 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun' is the album's epic, Lennon at his most musically daring and emotionally complex.

To me,'The White Album' is many things. It shows that, even stretched to the limit, The Beatles' riches were manifold. Their instinctive conceptual genius was unmatched in '68 and remains unchallenged 30 years later.

my favorite double album.. simply amazing.

I dig the title "The Beatles"... yes, its the white album.. but it was initially referred as The Beatles album...

seperation and unity co-exist in this album.

The most important music they made. I also dig the fact most of the songs werent radio played (except the obvious few) and its got an incredibly dark side to it..

experimental, bluesy, poppy, soulful, classical, rag dol, alt country, punk, acoustic, rock.. what more could u ask in a set.

all it needs is to be remastered..

At least in Holland...
Specially repackaged too.

I might be wrong edit....
I remember, when still working at Virgin I saw this 30th anniversary edition. Thought it was remastered too, but I might be mistaken...

The White Album was Charles Manson's favorite Beatles album

(but even he skipped Revolution #9, and preferred Blackbird, Piggies and Helter Skelter)

Don't you just love Bono's introduction of U2's Rattle & Hum version of Helter Skelter?

Yes, I do. And it's a pretty good cover version as well.

I love the album except for

Piggies
The continuing story of Bungalow Bill
Julia (so annoying and boring and indeed meaningless biggrin ) barf

and

Revolution 9
If i wanna trip i'd rather take acid razz
instead of listening to this trippy crap
(i know , not much of a comparison)

Some people say that it's the most important Beatles song. What do you know and like about this and the White Album.

About the White Album...

My favorite tracks are "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," "Wild Honey Pie," "I Will," "Rocky Raccoon" and "Martha My Dear"

About "Revolution 9"...

I was listening to the White Album a few times this weekend. Then I threw on Danger Mouse's Grey Album afterward.

Wild.

The Jay-Z track "Interlude" is redone using samples of "Revolution 9" and sort of becomes the hip-hop equivalent to it.

OMG!!!
omg I did the exact same thing this weekend...how ironic!!!! lol

I think it's just a bizarre coincidence, but I know what you mean. The Grey Album is easily one of my top five albums this year. Part of the fun of listening to it is trying to figure out which Beatles' song is which. "Dear Prudence" is almost unrecognizable. There are still one or two I haven't identified. And I refuse to cheat and search for the answers on the Internet.

Why do you think there are White and Black albums?

When Prince did the Black Album back in '87 or '88, do you think it was a big kiss-off to The Beatles' White Album? And when Jay-z did the black album, it was like reading an autobiography of his hard knock life. What do you think?
