Janet on MTV ?

How long will Janet be banned from MTV. I havn'e seen or heard anything about Miss Jackson since the titty incident. I mean come on, it's just a breast, madona and Spears kissed but a legend like janet show her boobs and she is gone from the network.

the supposed "MTV ban" is a sham. they own VH1 and BET, and "I Want You" was on those channels quite a bit. also saw "All Night (Don't Stop)" a few times as well.

That's how the industry works. MTV gave Janet the shaft after the Super Bowl incident. "All Nite (Don't Stop)" and "I Want You" received SCARCE rotation on the MTV network as a result. Janet's MTV.com page barely gets updated with new news since the controversy. Writers at MTV News now mention her either indirectly or in short, succinct sentences (in other artist's articles).

Actually, the MTV ban was a very real thing in the first 60 days prior to Nipplegate. Viacom scarcely rotated Janet's two videos from Damita Jo on MTV. BET, VH1 & VH1 Soul showed both videos frequently though. That still doesn't dismiss or negate the fact that MTV DID suppress airplay of Janet's videos on their flagship channel.

well, she may not have received any airplay on MTV anyway, being an older artist with no real buzz anymore. the "ban" was probably just a convenient way of them brushing her aside.

No "real buzz"? She was on the SUPER BOWL for Pete's Sake. Plus, she's still in touch with a younger pop audience.

Yeah, they're brushing her aside i think.

I mean, they did it to Prince, Madonna and MJ so i guess Janet is up to bat.

Now in days they only have room for Hilary, Avril and Lindsay Lohan.

honestly, if she hadn't shown her tit, that would have gone down as the least remarkable Super Bowl performance in history. pretty lackluster retread of the same old same old.

ANd you have to remember, through these older artists have younger followers, their primary fanbase are older people who've grown up with them. It's all marketing.
Most of the younger kids would much rather watch a young Britney do her thing than a middle aged Janet totally kick ass. It's just reality, don't feel bad.

Sorry for maybe coming across a bit immature for this comment but MTV are the biggest bunch of Dick Riders in the music world. From day 1 they proved this, and today dont give a sh*t about artists who made their company what it is today.

I definitely see ageism in effect when I watch MTV nowadays. For a time, they'd still spin videos by old rockers like Aerosmith, but even they had to enlist young starlets like Alicia Sliverstone to get healthy rotation.

Janet's nearing that stage, too, but the Super Bowl sh*t only acclerated it.

The same can be said for any artist in Super Bowl halftime history. Janet's, albeit notorious, was DEFINITELY the most memorable TV event in the last 25 years.

To be honest with you, I rarely watch MTV.

Sometimes I'm reluctant to say I was a former MTV Intern.

that's true. but hers particularly wasn't helped by the format that the halftime producers have been keen on for the last several years: taking a half dozen artists and having them perform a medley.

for the record, Diana Ross being wisked away dangling from a helicopter was pretty memorable lol

I think that you have a point for sure. When I have watched MTV, the videos promote younger artists, most of whom I haven't even heard of. What bothers me is the MTV heavily promotes Ashley Simpson and of course Jessica, stars of the "reality" TV series. So in a way, it's biased even among the young artists.

Yep, I would say that even though Janet definitely DOES maintain a very young fan base, MTV has "socially promoted" her to VH1 in a sense. However, I still think there was a backlash against Janet, not only with her videos but also with Clear Channel Entertainment. I just hope in time that the public forgets, and Janet can turn her music career around a la Prince. I would just love to see that.
May I also add that I really think it's kind of funny (as in lol funny) that Prince is very selective in his T.V appearances. I just saw a clip of the MTV Awards, and I really thought it was kind of cool that Prince didn't perform. It's like he was telling MTV, "Thanks, but no thanks." I just love Prince.

don't you mean "thanks but no thanks [except for that 30 minute show you put on for me where I played 2 songs from Musicology and an acoustic set]"? smile

well neither do record labels, to be honest. that goes for their treatment of artists and executives.

Sad but tru, but youd expect more from MTV, seeing as they now have an almost historical and iconic status.

they've got to pay the bills too, and they aren't going to do it on the backs of a bunch of has-beens, whether they made the channel as popular as it is or not. it was nice to see Prince get heavy rotation for Musicology this year, though. i'm surprised they haven't graduated U2 to VH1-only status. even more shocking is the amount of airplay John Mellencamp's new song is getting on MTV.

GrayKing is looking out for MTV's bottom line? eek

Also, when you say MTV are you referring to the flagship MTV network or are you talking about MTV Hits, MTV 2, VH1, BET and its sister stations?

flagship MTV. and i'm not looking out for their bottom line. but my higher education is in mass comm (tv, radio, film, music, journalism, pr, etc.), and i'm a couple years out of it, so i'm not the idealist that i was once upon a time. MTV is in the business to make money. the fact that they play videos at all is pretty amazing when you consider it's the lowest on the list of things that brings them ratings.
