Gay singers who were obviously gay, but never actually said they were gay at first

Thinking back to the 80's...Boy George was a big ole drag queen sleeping with the drummer, and yet somehow the general public was shocked when he said he was gay later on...just thinking of people who you kinda thought was gay and then actually did turn out to be gay/bi

Rupaul
Liberace
KD Lang
George Michael
Tevin Campbell
Elton John
Right Said Fred
Freddie Mercury
David Bowie

i don't think rupaul ever made any bones about being queer as a catfart. when you introduce yourself to the world by dressing in drag and singing a song called "supermodel" with the chorus "YOU BETTA WORK", it's a bit hard to backpeddle on your sexuality, you know?

i'm gonna need proof of that, because i remember ru from when he was an NYC east village performance artist/drag queen, and he was homolicious back then. he was on an episode of "andy warhol's 15 minutes" in his pre-fame days, and if memory serves, he went by the name "starbooty".

i don't have any tangible proof but i remember seeing several interviews with him/her where he spoke of being straight. he said drag was not a gay thing. years later he had a "coming out" interview. i think around the time of "...but i'm a cheerleader" if i'm not mistaken.

nope, cuz the wigstock movie came out at least two or three years before that flick, and ru is gay as can be in that flick. and i remember listening to ru's radio show back in '96 and he was hardly coy about his sexuality during his daily morning show. maybe waaaay back in the early-to-mid '80s, when he was doing his new-romantic/glam thing, he was all cryptosexual, but i think he came galumphing out of the closet at LEAST when he came out with "supermodel", if not a while before that.

well, just tellin' ya what i read. the interviews were definitely after his supermodel song...and he was definitely claiming to be a flaming hetero.

I had never been around any gay people until 1990 so I really didn't pick up on hardly any of the artists that were. Androgeny was a big look in the 1980s and a lot of the straight singers looked gay also.

I was shocked as hell about Freddy Mercury. I never would have dreamed that the guy from Judas Priest was gay. As far as Boy George, I didn't know what to make of him. I still don't consider him a drag queen because he never tried to give the illusion of breasts. I don't think he wore dresses either, just big ass robes and things. I knew George Michael was gay from the first moment I ever laid eyes on him in the "Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go) video. The way he danced and his gestures gave him away.

By the time RuPaul came on the scene in the early 1990s, I had been to several gay clubs and knew all the drag queen lingo that they talked. RuPaul was no surprise to me.

I'd have to agree with you, Anxiety. I don't know WHEN Ru might have claimed to be hetero, but I've read his book, Letting It All Hang Out- An Autobiography published, I believe, in '95 and judging from the pictures through the years and the text, he was out there long before he was popular enough to be interviewed on tv; I mean, at least since he was a teen. I don't think he would have claimed to be hetero! I have to say, though, that when dressed as a man, he's fine.

Andy Bell and Jimmy Somerville were open about their sexuality from the very start. The Pet Shop Boys, on the other hand, were not.

Mr7

I wasn't aware that David Bowie was
either Homosexual or Bi-sexual, due
to his marriage to a very female
supermodel and susequent children.

I'm aware that Bowie has'played' with
this image in the past and has previously
appeared in womens clothing, but I was not
aware that it was anything more serious.

Of course, as a rather recent discoverer of
Bowie I may be wrong.
