Riding on the Heals of Do they Know it's Xmas

Now who woulda predicted this....SHOCKER!

DUPRI TO REVAMP WE ARE THE WORLD - from the little hollow world of AP

Rap mogul Jermaine Dupri is set to revamp charity single "We Are the World" at a post-Grammy Awards party.
The Atlanta, Ga.-based star has called upon a host of new acts who didn't perform on the original USA for Africa single 20 years ago to take time out of their Grammy night (Feb. 13, 2005) celebrations to sing for him.

Dupri says, "It's called 'We Are the Future.' Quincy Jones called me, he asked me to do it. We're just gonna make it something extravagant.

"We gonna try to re-create, follow in the footsteps of those who made a big record before, like Michael [Jackson], Quincy and Lionel Richie."

The track will be recorded in the same A&M studios where the original charity single was recorded in 1985.

Dupri adds, "Hopefully Usher will be there, Kanye [West], Jay-Z ... all the bigwigs. We want to do what they did way back when. I'm looking forward to that.

"That's something you give your heart to. For Quincy to call me, that's my idol. I'm trying to make sure it's right."

The 20th anniversary Band Aid single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" was recorded in London last month.

And to that SSB adds..Yeah and that remake SUCKED! Is nothing sacred anymore?

As long as they're making all the money for charity, guess it's not too bad.

Why can't they come up with something original though?

That could raise even more money.

"We want to do what they did way back when. I'm looking forward to that."

I'm looking forward to seeing a music scene free of rehashed formulas and pandering to executives.

the first time around, quincy and lionel and michael used the hype of "we are the world" to promote bob geldof's charity; this time, it looks like the charity is dwarfy dupri's career. rolleyes

I hope they're only joking. I would hate to see this. It's sickening. Can't anyone come up with even one original thought anymore??

I fucking hate "Do They Know It's Christmas?" The lyrics are racist, condescending and so Christian-centric I could vomit. This song should be buried, not re-recorded.

And who is this Dupri guy...is he famous? Quincy, Lionel and Michael were HUGE at the time. The song was good and it had a lot of star power behind it.

I agree. They can do something very similar and not try and damage the original.

The idea is a compelling one and it's for a good cause...and just getting everyone together to sing a great song is an achievement, however do something original...something for the times. People are going to make comparisons anyway...but why blatently ripoff the whole idea?

And God knows they are so successful...after all, "What's Going On" sold???? "What More Can I Give" sold????? Didn't they do one that Spike Lee organized and it had a bunch of seventies artists..."We Are Family"! That sold????? No one wants them. There was at least some heart in the efforts that were made in the eighties. These new things are just classless!
