Best 60's funk acts: James Brown (the inventor), Sly, etc.

Best 70's funk acts: P-Funk, EWF, Isley Bros.

Best 80's funk acts: Prince and his empire would top the list, then Rick James, Zapp, Level 42, Fishbone, A Certain Ratio, The Higsons, APB.

Best 90's funk acts: Red Hot Chili Peppers (the greatest white funk band ever!)Soulive, Galactic, Jamiroquai.

Nice list, in my book not all of them count as funk artists but more as soul artists. But maybe that's what you meant to say at the start of your post.

The names that I didn't cut and paste should be under the "Funk" artist catagory. I will admit there were some people like Cymande (?) that I have no idea about. But I will co-sign on James Brown & Parliment/Funkadelic (and all their off shoot groups Brides, Parlet, etc.) I kind of put Sly in the pop/rock category, but that's just me.

I just wanted to point out that people like Janet Jackson and the Jets should not in any way shape or form be on an "ultimate funk artist" list.

I think people tend to think of Sly and the family stone as a cheesy radio hitmaker from the late sixties, but if you listen to albums like There's a Riot Going On and Fresh, I'd challenge you to find ANYONE that was funkier than that.

Sing A Simple Song

Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin

If Sly doesn't belong in the Funk category, then NO ONE Does!!

Sly is difinitely not cheesy 60's radio pop. They were a funky group, but I wouldn't classify them as a "Funk" group. Dig?

"If You Want Me To Stay" is my favorite Sly song.

Sure they are. But they were Funk in the same way that Prince is Funk. Both artists have done other things like Rock/Pop/Soul/Psychedelia, etc. But they are undeniably FUNKY!

And as I said a few posts up, I wouldn't exactly classify Prince as a "funk" artist either. He's done much more than that. Funk may be his roots but so is rock and pop. I feel the same about Sly.

But you could say the same about Parliament-Funkadelic-- their influences were everything from Doo Wop, Blues, rock groups like the Stooges and MC-5, to Hendrix , Sly Stone, James Brown, Beatles, Led Zeppelin,Psychedelia, Vanilla Fudge,Pop,Motown,Classical, etc. So where would you draw the line? who is and isn't a "Funk" group?

I think you summed up your own post with the line from Parliment/Funkadelic song title.

But the Jets are not a funk group, Freddie Jackson is not funk, Janet Jackson is not funk, Jackson 5 is not funk, and so on. I'm not talking about artist influences, I'm, talking about actual musicial output. Most of the groups I re-posted about were R&B or Pop groups.

If you want to base this discussion solely on artist influences than you may as well say Michael Bolton is a funk artist becuase he was influenced by The Isley Bros.

I was only responding specifically to what you said about Sly's roots(not the other stuff about Janet and the other Pop/r&B groups)...

Earlier, you said that you agreed P-funk was one of the top Funk Groups, but that you would put Sly Stone in a more Pop/Rock bag. My point was just that you could say similar things about about P-funk, but there's no denying their place in the Funk pyramid. so Sly Stone is definitely one of the cornerstones of Funk as we know it. James lit the fire, Sly took it to another level, George Clinton took it from there...

Sly made Miles Davis , Hendrix , Herbie Hancock AND George Clinton all delve more seriously into The Funk...They all wanted to Funk like Sly...
