You must be referring to the 80's version of Kool and the Gang. the rest of us are thinking of the '68 to '78 version, the one that gave us:

Jungle Boogie
Summer Madness
Funky Stuff/ More Funky Stuff
Hollywood Swingin'
Open Sesame
Spirit of The Boogie
Who's Gonna Take The Weight(Pts. I and II)
Love and Understanding (Come Together)
Universal Sound(Live)
Give It Up
Chocolate Buttermilk
Sea Of Tranquility (D'angelo remade this as " Send it On")
Let The Music Take Your Mind
Rhyme Time People
The Penguin
Kool It (Here comes the fuzz)
N.T. (pts I and II)
Pneumonia

Yeah, compared to their earlier stuff, the 80's version WAS pretty lightweight...

Forgive me if he's already been listed and I've just overlooked him but my pic for one of the best out there today is the org's "second favorite artist" Terence Trent D'arby/Sananda Maitreya. Some might dispute whether or not he's a pure funk artist, but if prince counts then so does he as far as I'm concerned.

Sananda has brought out some pure funk. As you say when Prince counts as a funk artist so does Sananda
