And Bring Me the Head of the Preacher Man is another great one. But yeah... there's nothing on the album that really screams out "Robert Smith is here!" "Swimming Horses" might be my favorite Banshees song ever. It's sounds totally unlike anything else they've ever done. Oddly enough I hear a strong Robert Smith influence in it.

I've had both the CD and VHS for forever so I don't really know if it's still in print. Used copies should be pretty easy to come by though. Then there is the studio album Smith recorded with the Banshees, 'Hyaena', which is really good, but I don't think he has that much of a presence on it. It's not like you can listen to it and immediately recognize that it's him playing guitar or anything. I was reading this whole conversation thinking y'all said "Smiths". I was so confused. "Morrissey recorded with the Banshees AND played guitar? Where the fuck have I been" then I realized what y'all were talkin about. I'm silly.

2. Prince - "Musicology" 3. George Michael - "Patience" 4. Elton John - "Peachtree Road" 5. and throw Rufus Wainwright - "Want Two" in there, even though i haven't listened to it yet. these are my top 5 because these are about the only albums i got this year, except for "DamitaJo" and i'm sure as hell not putting that on the list. hence, the unheard Rufus album in slot #5. whoops! edit. Loretta Lynn - "Van Lear Rose" can be #5 [Edited 12/8/04 19:33pm] What if his album is a tribute to "Damita Jo" and sounds just like it! Gasp, no!

Well, here's mine. Looking over this list, the vast majority of the acts on it have been around for twenty years or more. Looks almost like it could have been the best of 1984! Didn't really plan it this way, just looks like the best albums (to me) that came out this year were from older acts (I must confess, though, that I still haven't picked up the Interpol album. I have a feeling that it would make this list pretty easily).
1. Everybody Loves A Happy Ending- Tears For Fears Curt and Roland reunite to put together a flawless album. Easily my favorite of the year 2. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb- U2 A damned good rock album that could be a greatest hits in a parallel universe. 3. Astronaut- Duran Duran A great album that just gets better with every listen. Oh, and the original line-up is back!! 4. Contraband- Velvet Revolver Members of G&R team up with former STP frontman Scott Weiland to put out a fantastic, rockin' album. This CD has balls, baby! 5. The Cure- The Cure The Cure manage to do what few bands who have been around as long as they have can: make an album that is both contemporary, yet hearkens to their heyday. 6. Musicology- Prince While this may not be as great as many critics thought it was, it was still a great set. Definitely his most consistent album in a while. 7. Sacred Love- Sting His best since The Soul Cages 8. Scarlet's Treasures- Tori Amos Okay, technically this isn't an album, but rather an EP included with the Live From Sunny Florida DVD. Still, the songs are so great it deserves a spot on my list. 9. eMOTive- A Perfect Circle Great covers, and highly topical. Really hits home. 10. Patience- George Michael George runs the spectrum of his talents on this one. From electro-dance numbers to sweet ballads, George's voice has never been better Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
