I haven't heard the Arcade Fire record that everybody's raving about yet, and I just bought the Modest Mouse album last week and haven't really digested it in full...so this is probably a work in process.

1) The Earlies - These Were The Earlies - a sonic boom of Mercury Rev entwined with echos of the Beach Boys playing in the Beta Bands shed complete with monolithic chasms of thunderous synths and plaintive strings. A Must Have

2) Comets on Fire - Blue Cathedral - If any band had tried to meld the spirit of Floyd with the riffs of Sabbath, the sludgeathon of Kyuss and the almighty rock beheamoth of Zeppelin, I'd have told you to take a flying leap - that Comets on Fire have produced a record that exceeds this albut brief pigeoholing is a trimuph beyond belief.

3) Dungen - Ta Det Lungt - Psyche rock in 2004 with Swedeish vocals - NAH! Well, you'd be wrong. This one-man delirium rivals Beck in his heydey for musical accomplishment on this his first solo release. Pinning The Who, The Creation and countless rock n' roll classics he tops it off with the cream of the avant garde recalling the likes of Sigur Ros and post-rock to deliver one of this year's most beguling efforts.

4) The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free - That a chav with a penchant for mobiles and burberry could complete the best concept LP since The Mars Volta is truly remarkable. Skinner tells the best joke-monologues since Billy Connolly and instills his street-poetry with the pathos of Alan Bennett - each twist and turn is heartbreaking as it is hysterical. A triumph for the outsider.

5) Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld - Where to start? An outlandish commune of hippy Maharishi Japanese funksters with their hearts on the soul and their heads in the clouds. This combines soul-funk-post-rock-jazz-fusion and everything else. A prog-rock monster that'll take you a month to digest - but the results a truly satisfying. Just remember to swallow and taste before recording a verdict.

6) Secret Machines - Now Here is Nowhere - Beautiful. Complete with Floydian rasps and Flaming Lips sweeps this is the sound of space-rock being taken to the next level. Tremello and echo are driven on a plane of Spiritualized and Ashra Tempel with the added kick of some far out Venus-like nymph with bisons bollocks. A magical record with traces of Neil Young played through the dynamo of NASA.

7) Adem - Homesongs - This should have been furthet up the list but I forgot. Basically this is the Best singer-songwriter release of the year. Forget about Damien Rice and all those supermarket types - this is hearfelt, emotion-wreaking beauty wrapped up in warm blankets with zithers, accordians and whiskey-soaked vocals adding to a concoction of pure soul. Another MUST buy. You really should you know.

I know thats Seven - but seven's surely the magic number on Prince.Org. I'd add Deat From Above, The Music, Oceansize and TV On The Radio - but hey we aint got forever.

I agree with Musicology being a good LP - but I think if you Org-ers look deep into your souls you -as I do, as a MASSIVE - Prince fan, know this is far from his best - and in such a tremendous year for records - Prince hasn't shone as brightly.

I totally agree - I think this is the first really consistent record I've heard by him. I've loved the odd track in the past, (The Loneliest Guy on the Lower East Side is one of my favourite songs by anyone) but I always thought the albums were loaded with overly-cute and very mannered filler. He really hit a home run with this album...


Edit - you would think I would know the title of one of my favourite songs - that should read "Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side".

It's not his best album, no. But I think it's by far the most listenable album he's made in a long, long time.
