BEST Decade for music

In which decade(i.e. 1960-1969 NOT 1969-1979) do you think the BEST music was recorded? I'm torn between the 1960's and 1970's but if I HAD to choose, I would say the 1960's

Definitely the 60's.....The Beatles and Hendrix are the main reasons that come to mind. Their music changed everything. The 80's may have had more groups, more flash, more this, more that, but would they have been the same if The Beatles (the first group to EVER make a music video, not to mention their timeless music and songwriting) and Hendrix had not existed?

With the demographic of most people on this site you'll get the '80s as the most popular answer.

I'll take the'50s and '60s for Jazz and Gospel.

I'll take the '70s for the rest in a Shawshank mile. And overall the '70s if forced to choose. Most of the music back then sounds as if it could have been made yesterday. The '80s just don't have the overall depth to compare.

The 80's changed music forever. And now are making a comeback. Look at all the 80's music samples that are used nowadays. Artists are taking pop, rock and new wave and making it into hip-hop/rap. Hands down - the 80's were, are and will be king.

It's gotta be the 60s.

The missing link here so far, is the influence of that decade's R&B (in general)

Aretha Franklin
Sam Cooke
Otis Redding
James Brown
Wilson Pickett
Jackie Wilson
Sly & The Family Stone
The Isley Brothers
Chuck Berry
...

and Motown (specifically) in terms of laying a new foundation for future popular songwriting and performance.

Stevie Wonder
Smokey Robinson
Marvin Gaye
The Temptations
The Supremes
Martha & The Vandellas
...

The good (Purple Rain, China Girl), the bad (We Built This City, Girl You Know It's True), and the ugly (Everybody Have Fun Tonight, The Final Countdown). I'll say the 80s!

Can appreciate music from any decade, but I'm so envious of anyone that had the pleasure of listening to radio or going to concerts in

THE '60s.

Oh, my, g*d. The music was so wonderful during that time. So much variety -- the melodies were so infectious. I am jealous of any babyboomer!!

You hit the nail squarely on the head. thumbs up!

I try and remain open minded about all music, which is why i'll question myself about music I don't like.
A great deal of rap, punk, death-metal, etc. come to mind. The answer for me is a lack of melody.

For me, melody makes a song memorable.

Punk has lots more melody than people realize if you look at groups like Dead Kennedys, X, Ramones, and the Clash. The Punk Rock Orchestra really brings out the melody of punk. We got lots of melody. And lots of harmony too.

I agree. I think a lot of people who aren't into punk would be pleasantly surprised at how good and melodic some punk bands can be. There was a time when I didn't like nor understand punk so I can see how some people may not get it.

The 60's. It's the bedrock that all music is built on in one way or another. What a creative explosion there was that decade.

That is a question for older folks. How is an 18 year old person going to say the 80's were the best? It has a lot to do with how old you are, doesn't it? For me the 80's were cool but it was also when MTV came out, so that had a lot to do with it. I look forward to each decade. None are the best.

I grew up in the 80s and listened to more music during that decade than I ever have in the rest of my life put together. I was there at the advent of MTV and watched it around the clock and also listened to the radio non-stop blah blah blah. So I can vouch for the fact that the 80's sucked. biggrin

Except for the Dead Kennedys of course.

THe best of times, the worst of times but most of all, the best of times.

There are a lot of answers for this and it all depends on taste but I've noticed no one mentioend anything beyond the eighties, which makes sense to me! I think the real question is, what is the worst decade in music because I think the answers will be less varied with most people saying this decade and a few possibly saying the ninties. Also, what can be done to prevent this from being the worst decade in music? I think a big problem is radio. I'm sure there is good music out there but no one is playing. Even good pop songs ("What You Waiting For?") are ignored. What should be done?

What's up tA? I hear ya. Totally agree with what you said regarding melody though. That's what does it for me too. Just to get off topic and ask you a real quick question...Have you read any Hendrix biographies? If so, which do you think is best? I was reading "Electric Gypsy" and got to about chap 6 when I switched and started reading "Setting The Record Straight" which I thought would be better. I'm almost done with "Setting The Record Straight" but now I'm thinking "Electric Gyspy" is better and I plan to finish reading that one also. Just curious to see what you think. biggrin
