Now Stevie needs to bash... Mary J. Blige & Destinys Child for ruining his songs at the Billboard Awards last night.See,these performers are so used to singing mediocre songs that when they are confronted with great compositions like As and Living For The City, they just can't handle it.
Artists who should've participated in the tribute: Prince Teena Marie Chaka Khan Amel Larrieux Jill Scott I DON'T WANT TO BE NORMAL,because normal is part of the status quo, which I don't want to be a part of- Tori Amos

This was the only part of the show I caught save for Gwen's performance and I cringed through all of Mary's performance. She sounded so off and never quite found the right key. Then she just got really loud toward the end as if that would make up for not being able to do the famous up and down on "Alwaaaaays..." I remember Stevie and Babyface doind a Jacko tune called "gone to soon"! Quite good actually!
Jodeci would have no trouble doing "lately" as their version was better!

[Edited 12/9/04 12:26pm] Yes, but sounding off key is pretty typical of Mary.....

Yeah off-key is Mary's middle name. Anybody catch her trying to sing the words "I Tried" in that new song?

I didn't see the show but I can imagine what happened.
Mary f'd up one of Stevie's song on some "Diva" show a while back. She's must not be learning from past mistakes. This is what happens when you've been getting away with RIFFING over one-line vamps and are then confronted with having to SING a definite melody over specific chord changes. Those that can't hang, get exposed. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

She can sound OK on LP (with vocal adjustment and studio trickery, of course), but when she's live it's just horrible.

[Edited 12/9/04 12:26pm] Yes, but sounding off key is pretty typical of Mary..... That's one of the main reasons why I never got into MJB. She always sounds off at one point or another. Then the whole dramafest she delivers at the end of every song. Is the applause for her singing or for her dramatic portrayals? Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I'm starting to agree. I'm thinking that maybe giving up the 8 balls wasn't such a good career move.

Yeah. What makes this such a shame is that I truly believe she could be better. It's about wanting to be better on her part. Does she even know she's sounding like this? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Only men can sing in falsetto, no? Or is there something about Mary that we don't know?

I believe she doesn't try hard enough. I think she needs to have a vocal coach around her when she's singing songs that are not her own. She could indeed sing much better. Maybe she figures why bother when the likes of Jessica and Britney are making millions off their lousy voices.

Well really, she shouldn't be f'ng up any tune. Ya know? I guess the definition of "professional" has changed over the years. tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...rmusic.htm "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

I prefer her lower register as well which is why I thought she was really gonna tear up which she did... just... in an aurally offensive sorta way. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

But her latest was just.....I don't know, she sounded slightly *off* all the time. I don't think that voice is gonna age well, somehow. Honestly, she sounds like she wants to be Mary Wells but completely misses the point. [Edited 12/9/04 13:36pm]

Damn ya'll I should be wildin' on everybody around here but I'm tired lol and besides ya'll are slightly right.
I however think that her voice got stronger BUT she doesn't use it very well. Mary's singing voice is nothing to sneeze at. She just got to know her vocal limits thats all, she'll be fine that way. Throw a brick at me but I dug her Ray Charles tribute tho. [Edited 12/9/04 13:41pm]

I kept waiting for any of the singles to impress me, and they just didn't. I know I'll get it one day for collector's purposes, but I feel like she's lost something lately. Hopefully she'll get it back soon.

Honestly, she sounds like she wants to be Mary Wells but completely misses the point. That "slightly off" is the inability to hit those notes, or know what notes to hit. This is where the vocal coach would be invaluable. As far as her trying to be Mary Wells...she's got a looooong way to go. The delicacy of Two Lovers or My Guy? In the words of the great philosopher Homey D. Clown... ...
